NEED TO KNOW
Alicia Silverstone has always had her eye on the prize when it comes to her career.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly for their “90s Issue,” Silverstone looked back at some of her earliest roles. The interview called back to a thought that the actress, now 48, shared with the magazine back in 1995.
Of the news that she was offered a role on Beverly Hills, 90210 — then in its fifth season — Silverstone explained she sought more “classic” work.
“There’s no reason to get locked into a television show when you might be able to do a movie with somebody like Al Pacino,” she reasoned.

“I want to do more classic things. I would love to do period pieces. I would love to do Helena Bonham Carter’s roles,” Silverstone said.
“I’ve heard her say in articles — and I don’t know if they’re real, because I don’t believe articles anymore — but I’ve heard her say that she would like to do contemporary things. So, maybe we could swap.”
The interview came out just months before Clueless skyrocketed her to fame. The film would become a classic in its own right.

While Silverstone wore some iconic looks in the 1995 film, she was far from a fashionista off-screen, she admits.
“What’s funny is, when I got the role for Clueless, I wore jeans. Actually, my entire auditioning process up until around the time of Clueless, I wore jeans and a green T-shirt with a little pocket on it. That’s just what I wore every single day,” she says.
“At that age, I never had any interest in fashion at all, so I would just wear whatever was around, even if it was really unattractive flannel.”
