Directed and choreographed by Tony winner Christopher Gattelli (Death Becomes Her, Newsies), Schmigadoon! brings to life the Emmy-winning world created by Despicable Me/The Secret Life of Pets writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. Paul will pen the show’s book.
Like the TV series — which starred Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key — the musical follows New York doctors Josh and Melissa, who set off on a couples’ backpacking retreat but instead stumble into Schmigadoon, an enchanted town where life is one big musical. To escape, they must find true love, whether it’s with each other or someone else.
The premise was a wink at mid-century classics like Brigadoon, Oklahoma! and The Music Man, but with modern comedic twists. Paul’s original Emmy-winning songs, which will be expanded for the stage, including loving nods to the canon of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, and other Golden Age giants.
“Schmigadoon! finding its new home on the Broadway stage is an absolute dream come true,” Paul said in a statement. “Broadway is the culmination of the show’s creative journey, ending up somewhere it was born to be, giving audiences a fresh and exciting new way to fall in love with these characters and songs. I can’t wait for the curtain to rise this spring!”
Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels, who is among the producers of the Broadway production, also sang the show’s praises.
“Schmigadoon! is a love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals,” Michaels wrote in a September release. “It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. We’re very excited to bring it to Broadway.”
Tickets for Schmigadoon! go on sale Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. ET.
