Before becoming an accomplished rapper, Cardi B first gained attention in 2013 with her hilariously candid videos on Vine and Instagram.
The same authenticity, clever one-liners and unfiltered honesty that social media users gravitated towards were on full display when she joined the cast of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2015.
“Social media, they fell in love with me,” Cardi told VH1 before adding, “I would never, ever thought that so many people could relate to the things that I say. It has taken me to another world.”
That stratosphere would soon include the chart-topping 2017 lead single “Bodak Yellow” and her record-breaking debut album Invasion of Privacy in April 2018. Despite the seven-year wait for her anticipated sophomore album, Am I the Drama?, released in September 2025, Cardi never showed signs of slowing down.
From legendary performances (and reveals!) on major stages and appearances at the Met Gala to public rap feuds with Nicki Minaj and winning a Grammy Award, she has remained a fixture in pop culture — all while balancing motherhood and an on-again, off-again relationship with estranged husband and rapper Offset. The former couple share three children, and Cardi announced ahead of her second album release that she’s expecting her fourth child with boyfriend and NFL player Stefon Diggs.
A fashion and hip-hop icon, mother, philanthropist and best-selling artist, here’s how Cardi skyrocketed to fame and cemented herself as a cultural force in entertainment.

Carlos and Clara Almánzar — who are now divorced — welcomed daughter Cardi B (née Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar) in October 1992 in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood.
Born to a Dominican father who worked as a cab driver in N.Y.C. for nearly 10 years and a Trinidadian mother, Cardi has referred to her parents as her “biggest blessings.”
“I’ve been blessed since birth because of my parents,” she said in a video posted on Instagram in July 2018. “Like those are my biggest blessings, and I’m so thankful and I’m so grateful for them.”
As for her stage moniker, she initially went by “Bacardi” (yes, like the rum brand) before shortening it to “Cardi B” to match younger sister Hennessy Carolina’s alcohol-related name.
“My name is Belcalis, Growing up people called me Bacardi cause my sister name is Hennessy ..FYI,” Cardi shared on X (formerly Twitter) in July 2016.

After getting fired from an Amish supermarket, Cardi started stripping when she was 19 years old. She kept her decision to dance under wraps from her relatives for years.
While dancing, she became an Internet sensation after her videotaped rants went viral on Vine and Instagram.
In 2018, she revealed more details about her pole-dancing days and her mother’s displeasure with her working as an exotic dancer.
“When my mom found out I was a dancer, she was pretty upset,” Cardi told drag queen Naomi Smalls in a video for Cosmopolitan. “Me knowing that she used to hate it, it didn’t allow me to get comfortable with what I was doing.”
She added, “People say, ‘Why do you always got to say that you used to be a stripper? We get it.’ Because y’all don’t respect me because of it, and y’all going to respect these strippers from now on … Just because somebody was a stripper don’t mean they don’t have no brain.”

VH1
Cardi made her reality TV debut in 2015 as the “regula, degula, schmegula girl from the Bronx” on season 6 of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: New York, where her personality instantly made her a fan favorite. Throughout her time on the show, the star popularized funny one-liners, threw a shoe at rival Asia during season 7’s reunion special, and coined the classic phrase, “You know a girl have beef with me, she gon’ have beef with me forever.”
Cardi later tweaked the line for the chorus of the 2016 song “Foreva” from her first mixtape, Gangsta B—- Music, Vol. 1.
“You know me, I be with whatever / If a b—- beef with me, we gon’ beef forever,” she rapped.

Cardi also mentioned how her past as a dancer served as a way to test-drive music and what audiences enjoyed.
“If your song is not playing in the strip club, then it’s not popping,” she told Billboard in 2017. “Seeing the dancers singing to [‘Bodak Yellow’] and men throwing money, it feels like I accomplished something.”
Cardi would go on to perform “Bodak Yellow” on the red carpet at the 2017 MTV VMAs pre-show. She also gave an iconic interview ahead of the ceremony, further claiming her status as meme queen.
After earning two Grammy nominations for best rap song and best rap performance, the braggadocious New York anthem was later certified as diamond by the RIAA (10x platinum) in March 2021. Cardi became the first female rapper to reach the achievement, per Billboard.
