Maria Luiza Costa da Silva, a Brazilian content creator known online as “Malu Costantine,” died in an alleged stabbing on Jan. 31. She was 18.
Maria’s boyfriend, Gabryel Nascimento da Silva, 27, told authorities that he and the late content creator were exiting a bar in Recife, Brazil — where they were attending a pre-Carnival event by Bloco do Papada — when they encountered Gabryel’s ex-girlfriend Kallyne Santos da Silva, per local outlet g1.
According to a Military Police arrest report obtained by the outlet, Gabryel alleged that the three began to argue, and Kallyne started stabbing Maria. He attempted to defend his girlfriend, Gabryel continued, and he was also stabbed in the thigh. The alleged altercation ended when Maria grabbed the knife and stabbed Kallyne in the stomach, the report adds.

Maria and Gabryel were transported to a local emergency room by a bystander’s personal car, but Maria died before she could receive medical attention, per g1. Military police said that Kallyne fled the scene but was later found by authorities at an emergency room seeking medical attention and was transferred to another hospital, where she remains under custody.
Civil Police are investigating the case as a homicide, per g1.
Maria, a well-known content creator, maintained a following of nearly 30,000 on Instagram. Her account was set to private after her death.

In a translated statement shared to Instagram on Feb. 1, Bloco do Papada expressed “solidarity with the tragedy that affected young Luiza,” adding, “We join in the grief of her family and friends in this moment of immense sadness, wishing strength and comfort to all.”
The organization also maintained that the alleged stabbing was “an isolated incident” and that it occurred two hours after the official ending of the event.

“Bloco do Papada reaffirms its commitment to a carnival of peace, respect, and responsibility,” the statement added. “Acts of violence do not represent the values of the festival, nor the popular culture that we have defended for 10 years. We remain confident in the work of the authorities and reiterate the importance of carnival always being a space of joy, coexistence, and preservation of life.”
