NEED TO KNOW
Kristin Davis is recounting a scene in Sex and the City that had to be reshot after an assistant director laughed out loud on set.
On the Thursday, Jan. 29 episode of her Are You a Charlotte? podcast, the 60-year-old actress recounted the making of season 3, episode 12, titled, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
The episode focuses on Charlotte’s wedding to Trey MacDougal, whom she realizes may have impotence issues just one night before their wedding.
Right before Charlotte is set to walk down the aisle, she pulls aside her bridesmaid Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) to tell her that Trey, “couldn’t get it up.”

The moment, she added, was stressful as an actor — and made worse when someone on set laughed at an inappropriate time.
“I remember the stress. I was super stressed about how to pull that moment off of, you know, basically pulling her off, you know, she’s walking down the aisle and pulling her back and telling her, like, ‘He can’t get it up. Trey can’t get it up,'” Davis recounted.
She continued: “I was very, very worried about that. And at the time that it happened, we had an AD. I’m not gonna say her name. She was a woman, first AD, and she was sitting on a ladder right behind us. And she laughed out loud on my close-up, the first time I did it.”
“And and we had to cut. It wasn’t usable,” she said. “And I was so mad because I had been so stressed about it. And her laugh had ruined that take, and it had been a really good take. So then I had to do it again.”
Davis added that she wasn’t sure if the moment was meant to be “funny” or “really upsetting,” saying, “Obviously, Charlotte’s upset, but I couldn’t tell if that was like a laugh line or if it wanted to be a laugh line or if the writers thought it was gonna be a laugh line.”

Ultimately, Charlotte divorces Trey, but in real life, Davis has recalled the “joy” of working with MacLachlan on Sex and the City.
In a 2025 episode of her podcast, Davis revealed that the And Just Like That… writers had hoped to bring MacLachlan back for a guest appearance on the Sex and the City reboot.
Davis said the scrapped plot line would have seen Charlotte admitting that she felt there was something “unfinished” about her relationship with her ex-husband, though MacLachlan ultimately turned the role down. Davis said the actor ” didn’t want there to be kind of a sad note to the end.”
The series finale for And Just Like That… aired in August 2025.
