NEED TO KNOW
Perhaps some viewers didn’t fall for the banana in the tailpipe, but audiences fell in love with Beverly Hills Cop and its breakout star, Eddie Murphy, as Detective Axel Foley.
Released on Dec. 5, 1984, the Martin Brest-directed film transformed the then-23-year-old comedian from a Saturday Night Live cast member to a leading man on the big screen.
“Beverly Hills Cop was my first movie that I’m the lead in,” Murphy told Today in June 2024. “If I travel overseas, they call me Axel Foley. Axel is an everyman. He’s not a superhero or a super-cop; he’s the everyman that rises to the occasion. I think that’s why people like it. And more than anything, he’s funny.”
That laughter translated at the box office: The action comedy grossed more than $316 million worldwide, according to The Numbers, cementing Murphy’s rise and spawning three sequels — including 2024’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. The original movie earned a Golden Globe nomination for best motion picture — comedy or musical and an Oscar nod for Best Writing (Original Screenplay) in 1985.
The heat is on decades later, as the beloved first installment celebrates its 41st anniversary in December 2025. Here’s where the cast of Beverly Hills Cop is now.

Already known for his stand-up comedy and as an SNL cast member, Murphy’s star turn in Beverly Hills Cop was preceded by roles in 1982’s 48 Hrs. (another buddy cop comedy) opposite Nick Nolte and 1983’s Trading Places with former SNL castmate Dan Aykroyd. Notably, his 1987 stand-up film, Eddie Murphy: Raw, is one of the most influential in the genre.
Murphy’s performance in the 1984 classic would earn him a Golden Globe nod for best performance by an actor in a motion picture — comedy or musical. He would go on to reprise his role as Axel Foley — a shrewd Detroit officer perpetually drawn back to southern California to solve murders and investigate a series of robberies and a counterfeiting ring — in all three subsequent films in the franchise: Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Beverly Hills Cop III (1994) and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024).
Along the way, Murphy also starred in other high-profile comedies, including Coming to America (1988), Boomerang (1992) and The Nutty Professor remake (1996). He’s also voiced characters in Disney’s Mulan (1998) and the Shrek film franchise. His supporting role in 2006’s Dreamgirls landed him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe nomination. He later earned critical acclaim for his role in 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name and starred in the long-awaited 2021 sequel Coming 2 America.
The actor’s forthcoming projects include a fifth Shrek film, set for release in 2027, a standalone Donkey-centric movie and a reboot of The Pink Panther.
Murphy’s legacy and decades-long career on-screen and onstage are chronicled in the Netflix documentary Being Eddie.
“In a business where people come and go, most people don’t get 50 years,” he told PEOPLE in November 2025.
Murphy is the father of 10 children. He shares five with ex-wife Nicole Murphy and two with current wife Paige Butcher. Murphy also has three children from previous relationships with Paulette McNeely, Tamara Hood and Spice Girls singer Mel B.

Before taking on the role of Detective Billy Rosewood, one of Foley’s partners in Beverly Hills Cop, Judge Reinhold had appeared in memorable ’80s comedies such as Stripes (1981), Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and Gremlins (1984).
Like Murphy, Reinhold reprised his Beverly Hills Cop role in all three sequels. Following the 1984 original film, he acted alongside Danny DeVito and Bette Midler in the 1986 dark comedy Ruthless People. He has also been a regular cast member of The Santa Clause movie franchise, starring Tim Allen and Martin Short.
In 1994, he earned an Emmy nomination for his memorable guest appearance as Aaron, “the close talker” boyfriend of Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), on Seinfeld. He’s had notable guest roles on shows like Ellen and Arrested Development.
Reinhold has been married to Amy Reinhold since 2000. They share a daughter, Haley, who was born in 2013.

John Ashton had minor roles on-screen in Starsky and Hutch and Dallas before taking on the role of Sgt. John Taggart — Rosewood’s by-the-book partner who helps Foley pursue justice for his murdered friend (James Russo).
After Beverly Hills Cop, Ashton appeared in King Kong Lives (1986), Some Kind of Wonderful (1987), She’s Having a Baby (1988) and Midnight Run (1988). He was also a series regular on Hardball and Brookside before appearing in Ben Affleck’s 2007 directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone.
Ashton reunited with his former super-cop costars in Beverly Hills Cop II and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F before he died at 76 in September 2024, nearly three months after the launch of Axel F on Netflix.
He is survived by his wife, Robin Hoye, whom he married in 2002, as well as his two children and his three stepchildren.

After an appearance on Remington Steele and a starring role alongside Kevin Bacon, Steve Guttenberg, Mickey Rourke and Ellen Barkin in the 1982 TV movie Diner, Paul Reiser jumped into the role of Detective Jeffrey Friedman, an occasional partner of Foley in Detroit.
Reiser went on to fight Xenomorphs in James Cameron’s Aliens in 1986, but his biggest claim to fame came in 1992 when he starred opposite Helen Hunt on the NBC sitcom Mad About You. The series brought Reiser a slew of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations over its original seven-season run, which wrapped in 1998. Both he and Hunt returned for a limited 12-episode revival in 2019.
Reiser has also appeared in Judd Apatow’s Funny People (2009), Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra (2013) and Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash (2014).
Throughout seasons 2, 3 and 4, he had a supporting role on Stranger Things and earned another Emmy nomination for his role on The Kominsky Method with Michael Douglas. He also starred on the short-lived comedy Reboot alongside Rachel Bloom.
Reiser, who also appeared in Beverly Hills Cop II and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, has been married to Paula Ravets since 1988. The couple have two sons, Ezra and Leon.

Jonathan Banks has been bringing his gruff, no-nonsense vibe to the big and small screen for decades, appearing in a small role as a local cop in Gremlins and as bad guy Zack in Beverly Hills Cop that same year.
Though he earned an Emmy nomination in 1989 for his role on the crime drama Wiseguy, Banks is perhaps best known for playing Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad. He also reprised the character on the prequel series Better Call Saul and the 2019 follow-up film El Camino. His time in the Breaking Bad franchise would earn him five more Emmy nominations.
In 2024, Banks starred opposite Noomi Rapace on the Apple TV sci-fi series Constellation and voiced Sean Noonan on HBO Max’s Harley Quinn spinoff series Kite Man: Hell Yeah! He also appeared on the 2025 Netflix limited series The Beast in Me.
Banks was married to his first wife, Marnie Fausch, from 1968 to 1970. The couple share one daughter. He shares twins and a stepdaughter with his second wife, Gennera Cebian.

Bronson Pinchot was an unknown 25-year-old actor struggling to make ends meet when Beverly Hills Cop premiered in 1984.
He had just about two minutes of screen time as the heavily accented gallery worker Serge, but he made an impression on moviegoers and A-listers alike.
“Five seconds after the movie came out,” he told PEOPLE in 2024, “I met Carrie Fisher, and she took me to a party at Rod Stewart’s house. I’m chatting with Elton John like, ‘What’s going on?’ ”
He went on to his memorable, Emmy-nominated turn as “Cousin” Balki Bartokomous on the sitcom Perfect Strangers for its eight-season run between 1986 and 1993, working steadily though somewhat quietly for the years that followed. (When it comes to show business, he told PEOPLE, “I don’t want any of the ‘show.’ “)
Pinchot reprised the role of Serge in Beverly Hills Cop III and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. In 2025, he appeared on Netflix’s whodunnit series, The Residence.

He reunited with his former costars for 1987’s Beverly Hills Cop II before moving on to 1987’s RoboCop and 1990’s Total Recall. Cox has also appeared on series such as Spencer, St. Elsewhere, Stargate SG-1, Nashville and seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy.
According to his official website, Cox is also an accomplished musician. He and his late wife, Mary, who died in 2006, have two sons together.

Lisa Eilbacher started her career as a child actor before appearing on The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries and in the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman as an adult.
Though she continued to act after playing Jenny — a friend of Murphy’s Foley back in Detroit and a worker at a Beverly Hills art gallery — in the blockbuster comedy, she hasn’t appeared on-screen since the 1995 TV movie 919 Fifth Avenue.
Eilbacher has been married to her husband, director and cinematographer Bradford May, since 1988.

Before playing villain and art gallery owner Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop, British actor and writer Steven Berkoff had a prolific career in theater, TV and film dating back to the 1950s.
Throughout the ’70s and ’80s, he was featured in everything from A Clockwork Orange (1971) and Octopussy (1983) to Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Under the Cherry Moon (1986).
Since then, his main passion has been theater, per his official website. However, he’s stayed busy over the years with roles in 2010’s The Tourist and 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Throughout 2019 and 2020, he appeared on the Vikings series, and in 2025, starred in the war movie Desperate Journey.
Berkoff has two daughters from previous relationships. According to The Standard, he has been with his partner, pianist Clara Fischer, for more than 30 years.

Gilbert R. Hill was a real-life police detective who played Foley’s boss, Inspector Douglas Todd, in the first three Beverly Hills Cop films.
Hill was showing Beverly Hills Cop director Brest around on a location-scouting trip when the filmmaker eyed him for a role in the movie.
“I thought, ‘Holy smoke, there could be something here,’ ” Brest told PEOPLE in a 1985 interview about casting Hill. “After only one or two tries, his natural nervousness faded, and we started improvising. Not only was he able to put out a lot of hot-tempered emotion, but, in a subtle way, convey an underlying love, the kind a father would have for a son. That’s difficult for a professional actor, and the fact that Gil was doing it just blew my mind.”
He didn’t pursue an acting career after his appearances in the film franchise. Instead, Hill eventually became head of the Detroit Police Department’s homicide division and pursued a political career. Deadline reported that he was elected to city council in 1989 and became city council president in the following election. He also made an unsuccessful run for mayor in 2001.
Hill died at the age of 84 in February 2016. He’s survived by three children he shared with his late wife, Delores Hooks, whom he was married to until her 2015 death, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
