Kim Kardashian has a regret over her controversial 2022 Met Gala look.
The reality star and SKIMS founder, 45, made one of her most controversial moves to date in May 2022 when she pulled Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress out of the archives for the star-studded event. Over three years later, she’s sharing a regret over the look — but, spoiler alert, it isn’t the dress.
In a post-credits scene of the Nov. 27 episode of The Kardashians, Kardashian revealed that she wishes she had teamed the crystal-covered gauze column gown — perhaps her most talked-about red carpet moment of all time — with a different hairstyle.
Specifically, she regrets going full-on Marilyn with an ultra-blonde look, stating that she realized after the event that her dark tresses would have been better suited for the historical red carpet moment.

“I will bring this up til the end of time,” Kardashian said in the episode. “I don’t know why, but everyone told me, ‘Don’t do Marilyn hair. You’re gonna look like a wax figure of Marilyn.’ We just thought we wanted to be blonde.”
Rather, the reality star continued, she wishes she had channeled a different historical figure (and the wife of the president Monroe serenaded while wearing the relic): Jackie Kennedy.
“I should’ve been, like, dark, Jackie O vibes,” said the SKIMS founder, adding that she “photoshopped it 500 different ways after the fact” to see the difference with various hair colors.
The star also said she has since “tortured” her hairstylist, Chris Appleton, over the “decision.”
Designed by Jean Louis, the Monroe dress originally cost $12,000 and was reportedly so tight, the late fashion icon had to be sewn into it prior to her famed “Happy Birthday” performance for President John F. Kennedy on May 19, 1962.
Ripley’s purchased the vintage gown from Julien’s Auction back in November 2016 for a whopping $4.81 million, making it one of the most expensive dresses in the world.

After Kardashian pulled it out of the archives for the 2022 gala, she was met with intense backlash both for putting the historical clothing item “at risk” and for the strenuous and publicized transformation she underwent to fit into it. (She lost 16 lbs. in three weeks and committed to a severe diet to wear the relic.)
At the time, Dr. Justine De Young, professor of fashion history at the Fashion Institute of Technology, told PEOPLE that the star’s look was “irresponsible and unnecessary.”
“She can — and did — commission a replica which would be indistinguishable from the original,” said the professor. “Such an iconic piece of American history should not be put at risk of damage just for an ego-boost and photo-op.”

Kardashian inspired even more backlash after the internet noticed that the gown appeared to have been damaged during the May 2022 event — though the star denied any harm in a recent lie detector video for Vanity Fair with her All’s Fair costar Teyana Taylor.

“This one, I wanna settle this for once and for all. Did you whoop Marilyn Monroe’s dress?” Taylor, 35, asked The Kardashians star, who simply responded, “No.” “So you’re saying that it got you already whooped?” the musician pressed, as Kardashian added, “I don’t know how it got to me. But it’s perfect now.”
After Taylor pressed once more, the SKIMS founder said: “You’re gonna cost me $10 million in insurance. Let’s move on.”
Ripley’s also shut down any insinuation that the reality star caused damage to the dress during the short period of time she wore it for the Met Gala.
“From the bottom of the Met steps, where Kim got into the dress, to the top where it was returned, the dress was in the same condition it started in,” said Ripley’s VP of publishing and licensing, Amanda Joiner, who was with the dress during its journey from Orlando to New York, as well as throughout the day of the Met Gala.
