NEED TO KNOW
Kevin Spacey is slowly returning to the spotlight, sharing what his life has looked like since he was accused of multiple sexual assaults starting in 2017.
In October of that year, actor Anthony Rapp alleged that Spacey made a sexual advance on him when he was 14. More than 30 allegations followed, and in early November 2017, the House of Cards actor sought treatment and was later fired by Netflix.
Spacey has denied all claims against him and received criticism for coming out as gay in response to Rapp’s initial accusations.
In the following years, Spacey was found not liable for battery related to the Rapp allegations in 2022 and not guilty of nine sexual assault charges in 2023 in London. Now, he’s trying to find his way back to Hollywood. Spacey has worked on a handful of projects, including 2022’s The Man Who Drew God — his first movie since the 2017 allegations — 2024’s Peter Five Eight and the forthcoming indie thriller The Awakening.
In May 2025, Spacey returned to Cannes, France, for the first time since 2016 to accept a lifetime achievement award from the Better World Fund and meet with potential buyers for The Awakening. Just months before, though, Spacey was embroiled again in a British civil suit from actor Ruari Cannon, per NPR.

Spacey has faced multiple claims and charges of sexual misconduct, all of which he has denied. The first allegations against the Usual Suspects star came in 2017, during the height of the #MeToo movement.
In October of that year, Rapp accused Spacey of making sexual advances on him when he was 14 years old. On Oct. 30, he apologized to Rapp in a statement on X and came out as gay. Five years later, Spacey told CNN, “I regret my entire statement” to Rapp after allegedly learning to “never apologize for something you didn’t do.”
On Nov. 2, 2017, a representative for Spacey said the actor would be seeking treatment, and the next day, Netflix cut ties with him; Spacey’s character was subsequently killed off House of Cards.
More allegations followed, including former Boston TV news anchor Heather Unruh accusing Spacey of groping her teenage son in Nantucket in 2016 and filmmaker Tony Montana claiming Spacey groped him in 2003.
After launching an investigation, the Old Vic theater in London, where Spacey was artistic director from 2003 to 2015, announced in mid-November 2017 that they found 20 allegations of “inappropriate behavior” from the actor between 1995 and 2013.
In April 2018, a 1992 sexual assault case against Spacey was turned over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for further review.
Then, in July, three more people came forward in England and accused Spacey of sexual assault. In August, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office received a new sexual assault case involving Spacey, reps from the office confirmed to PEOPLE at the time, and in September, an unidentified man sued the Oscar winner for sexual battery in an alleged incident that took place in Spacey’s Malibu home.

In September 2018, the L.A. County D.A.’s office shared that Spacey would not face charges in the alleged 1992 sexual assault, as the man’s “allegation is outside the statute of limitations.”
In December 2018, Spacey was charged with felony sexual assault from the alleged 2016 incident in Massachusetts, PEOPLE confirmed at the time. The Tony winner was arraigned in January 2019 and pleaded not guilty.
On June 27, 2019, the Nantucket accuser filed a civil lawsuit against Spacey, then dropped the suit on July 5. It was dismissed “with prejudice,” which means it cannot be refiled. The sexual assault criminal case was ultimately dropped on July 17 due to the accuser’s “unavailability.”
Three years after his initial claims, Rapp sued Spacey in September 2020. The Star Trek: Discovery actor accused Spacey of sexual assault, sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress at a party at Spacey’s home in 1986. Despite the statute of limitations running out, Rapp was able to file the lawsuit under New York’s Child Victims’ Act.
The jury concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove that Spacey inappropriately touched Rapp, according to NBC News, and found him not liable for battery in October 2022.
That year, Spacey was charged with 12 counts of sexual assault in the U.K. The allegations included, but were not limited to, allegedly groping and forcing penetrative sex on four men in London between 2001 and 2013, per The Guardian.
After a delay, his trial began on June 30, 2023. When he took the stand, Spacey said he was “crushed” by the allegations against him. He told the court he thought he was being “romantic” and “intimate,” according to BBC News.
“It did not happen in a violent, aggressive, painful way,” he claimed. “It was gentle … and it was, in my mind, romantic.”
On July 26, 2023, Spacey was found not guilty of nine counts of sexual assault in London’s Southwark Crown Court. The other three charges were struck, according to BBC News.

Though Spacey was cleared of charges in New York in 2022 and London in 2023, new accusations surfaced.
More victims, including his estranged brother, Randy, came forward in Investigation Discovery’s two-part docuseries Spacey Unmasked, which was released in May 2024.
Spacey spoke out against the documentary on X, writing on May 2, 2024, that over the prior week he had “repeatedly requested that #Channel4 afford me more than 7 days to respond to allegations made against me dating back 48 years and provide me with sufficient details to investigate these matters.”
Following the star’s post, Channel 4 and Roast Beef Productions provided a joint statement to PEOPLE saying the docuseries would broadcast as planned and claimed that “Kevin Spacey has been given sufficient opportunity to respond.”
Spacey then spoke to journalist Dan Wootton about the allegations.
“Nobody in Hollywood has ever presented a path back for me. There’s no coursework material. I’ve been given no boxes to check, no nothing. It seems that some are content with just canceling me forever,” Spacey said. “It’s a life sentence.”
In February 2025, another sexual abuse civil lawsuit was brought against Spacey in London.

In February 2025, Guy Pearce told The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast that he felt “scared” of Spacey when they made their 1997 film L.A. Confidential.
“I was young and susceptible, and he targeted me, no question,” he said, in part, alleging of the situation that he “probably was a victim to a degree” though not “to the extent that other people have been to sexual predators.”
Pearce added that while making L.A. Confidential, he downplayed unwanted advances from Spacey as “nothing” for about “five months,” and it wasn’t until other allegations came to light in 2017 that he “broke down and sobbed, and I couldn’t stop.” The actor also claimed to have had “a couple of confrontations” with Spacey after 2017 that became “ugly.”
Spacey responded to Pearce’s comments with a video shared on X on Feb. 8, noting that he “would have preferred not to have to play this out in the media.”
“We worked together a long time ago. If I did something then that upset you, you could have reached out to me then. We could have had that conversation,” Spacey said in the clip. “But instead, you’ve decided to speak to the press, who are now, of course, coming after me because they would like to know what my response is to the things that you said. You really wanna know what my response is? Grow up.”
The American Beauty actor went on to say that Pearce visited him in Savannah, Ga., one year after they filmed together and claimed that his former costar was “not a victim.”
This was not the first time Pearce spoke out about Spacey. During a 2018 appearance on an Australian talk show, the Memento star said Spacey was an “amazing” and “incredible” actor, but he had a “slightly difficult time” with him, claiming that Spacey is a “handsy guy.”

The two-time Oscar winner has dipped his foot back into Hollywood.
Spacey has appeared in a few films, including The Man Who Drew God (2022), Peter Five Eight (2024) and The Contract (2024), and is attached to the upcoming thriller The Awakening, which was looking for buyers during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
In May 2025, Spacey received a lifetime achievement award from the Better World Fund. Though the ceremony took place in Cannes and marked the first time Spacey was back in town since 2016, it was not an official festival event.
“Who would have ever thought that honoring someone who has been exonerated in every single courtroom he’s ever walked into would be thought of as a brave idea,” he acknowledged during his speech, per Variety.
In June 2025, he received the Maximo Excellent Award during the 2025 Italian Global Series Festival. He received two similar awards in Italy in recent years: the Stella della Mole award for lifetime achievement, the highest honor given by the National Museum of Cinema, and the Nations Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Though he is notoriously private about his personal life, Spacey did share on Piers Morgan Uncensored in July 2024 that he had been living in Baltimore since 2012, when he started filming House of Cards there. At the time of his appearance, the home Spacey had been in since 2016 was being foreclosed on.
“My house is being sold at auction. So I have to go back to Baltimore and put all my things in storage,” the actor told Morgan, adding, “I’m not quite sure where I’m gonna live now.”
When asked by the news host if he was facing bankruptcy, Spacey said he “managed” to “dodge it” but was facing mounting debt from legal bills, sharing that he owed “many millions.” Over a year later, he told The Telegraph that he has “no home.”

While accepting the lifetime achievement award in Cannes in May 2025, Spacey said he has “come out the other side of these last few challenging years not angry, not bitter, not resentful, but more present, more loving, more understanding and more forgiving than I ever have been in my life.”
He also noted, per AFP, “I’m glad to be working, I’ll tell you that.”
Then, during an onstage interview with IGSF Artistic Director Marco Spagnoli in June 2025, Spacey reflected on how his legal troubles have impacted his career.
“These experiences have allowed me to stop, assess, reassess and listen, and be very grateful for the work I’m able to do both on screen and off screen,” Spacey said, per Deadline.

A few actors gave statements to The Telegraph in May 2024, calling for Spacey’s return to acting, including Sharon Stone and Liam Neeson.
“I can’t wait to see Kevin back at work. He is a genius. He is so elegant and fun, generous to a fault and knows more about our craft than most of us ever will,” Stone told the U.K. outlet.
Neeson noted that he “was deeply saddened to learn of the accusations” against Spacey but called the Casino Jack star “a good man and a man of character.”
“He’s sensitive, articulate and non-judgmental, with a terrific sense of humor,” the Taken star told The Telegraph. “He is also one of our finest artists in the theater and on camera. Personally speaking, our industry needs him and misses him greatly.”
Stone doubled down on her comments in a July 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, noting that “people are mad at me” for defending Spacey.
“I said that after being in therapy for seven years, not being allowed to work, losing his home, losing everything, he should be allowed to come back,” she said. “He’s reached out to everybody he’s offended and said he’s sorry.”
Separately, Brian Cox told THR in December 2024, “Maybe he got too out of hand, but I don’t think he should be punished endlessly for it. There should be a case of forgive and forget. Let’s move on. I think he should be given the opportunity to come back to work.”
