Sabrina Carpenter and Sydney Sweeney are two of entertainment’s busiest women, and Amanda Seyfried wants to add one more gig to their plates — a role in Mamma Mia 3, specifically.
“I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids,” she mused to Entertainment Tonight while on the red carpet at Sunday night’s Governors Awards (Nov. 16). “Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls I really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it…. we’re all gonna be somewhere tropical, and ABBA will be playing!”
Given Carpenter’s recent career moves, an appearance in a third Mamma Mia film isn’t too far out of the question. Last week (Nov. 11), multiple outlets reported that Carpetner inked a deal to produce and star in Universal Pictures’ forthcoming Lorene Scafaria-helmed musical film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Before “Espresso” and the six 2026 Grammy nominations she earned for Man’s Best Friend, most fans first encountered Carpenter through her roles on Disney’s Girl Meets World and films like 2018’s The Hate U Give and 2019’s Tall Girl.
Sweeney, on the other hand, recently wrapped production on the upcoming third season of HBO’s Euphoria. The Emmy-nominated actresses starred in several films this year, including Echo Valley and Christy, the latter of which has earned her a bit of Oscar buzz. Next month (Dec. 19), Sweeney will team up with Seyfried for Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, which is loosely inspired by Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name.
Though a third Mamma Mia film remains a nebulous concept, Seyfried clearly has a game plan in place already. She appeared in the 2008 ABBA-themed jukebox musical romantic comedy and returned for the 2018 sequel, which grossed $400 million. Judy Craymer, who worked on the original Mamma Mia stage musical, announced that a third film was in development back in 2020. Three years later, ABBA member Benny Andersson called a prospective third film “wishful thinking” without substantial changes. Regardless, Craymer reaffirmed that a third film is in the works in an October 2023 interview with Variety.
