The fish-out-of-water story follows bubbly, pink-clad sorority sister Woods (Witherspoon) who decides to enroll at Harvard Law School in order to win back Warner (Matthew Davis), the boyfriend who dumped her because he didn’t deem her serious enough. But even while being underestimated at the Ivy League school, Woods ultimately proves just how smart she actually is.
The movie made more than $140 million at the box office and was nominated for two Golden Globes: best picture — musical or comedy and best actress in a musical or comedy for Witherspoon.
It also spawned a 2003 sequel — Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde — and has inspired a currently-in-production prequel series.
