NEED TO KNOW
Nicki Minaj and 4 Non Blondes probably never imagined sharing a track — but TikTok had other plans.
The app’s latest viral craze pairs Minaj’s “Beez in the Trap” with 4 Non Blondes’ 1993 hit “What’s Up?” in a surprisingly perfect collision of genres. The original remix was crafted by TikTok user @dj.auxlord, who is known for mashing up seemingly random and incompatible songs. Originally posted in August 2025, @dj.auxlord’s remix didn’t blow up until October; now, more than 700,000 videos featuring the sound have been shared across the platform.
Typical videos follow a simple format: Two participants stand back-to-back as the camera pans from one person lip-syncing the 4 Non Blondes chorus (made famous by lead singer Linda Perry) to the other rapping along with Minaj.
One of the most-viewed takes came from TikTok user @almayduh, which featured two people dressed as Miss Trunchbull and Bruce Bogtrotter — complete with chocolate cake — from Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel Matilda and the subsequent 1996 film of the same name. That single video has racked up over 107.5 million views and nearly 20 million likes.
Here’s everything to know about the viral TikTok trend, including the meaning behind “Beez in the Trap.”
What is the “Beez in the Trap” TikTok trend?
Khloe Kardashian/TikTok
The “Beez in the Trap” TikTok trend is a viral mashup that pairs Minaj’s 2012 hip-hop track “Beez in the Trap” with 4 Non Blondes’ 1993 rock anthem “What’s Up?” to create one of the most chaotic —and addictive — sounds on the platform. Most versions follow the same setup: two people stand back-to-back as the camera dramatically pans between them.
When the audio begins, the first person lip-syncs Perry’s emotional “And I say hey-yeah-yeah…” line with exaggerated passion, often clutching their chest or reaching toward the camera for dramatic effect. Then, on the beat drop, the camera swings to the second person, who delivers Minaj’s deadpan line “Beez in the trap, bee-beez in the trap.”
Some of the funniest videos build full storylines around the mashup, and Halloween has only made the trend bigger. Friends dress as opposites — like Moana vs. Maui, Pennywise vs. Freddy Krueger or Fiona vs. Lord Farquaad — and use the audio to play up their extremes.
What does “Beez in the Trap” mean?
Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon/TikTok
According to Minaj, “Beez in the Trap” is slang for being constantly on the grind and making money wherever you go.
In an April 2012 interview on The Graham Norton Show, she explained, “[Beez] just means, ‘I am always…’ you know, that’s our slang way of saying, ‘I beez doing such-and-such-and-such.’ So it’s really like, ‘I am always in the trap.’ Now, the trap, ladies and gentlemen, relates to anywhere where you get your money.”
She then jokingly referred to Norton, saying, “You in the trap right now, playboy.”

Both 4 Non Blondes and Minaj have reacted to the TikTok trend — and they’re loving it.
“We can’t believe the love this trend is getting!” 4 Non Blondes wrote on Instagram, where they shared some of their favorite mashup videos, including clips of Dancing with the Stars contestants Alix Earle and Elaine Hendrix.
“Crazy,” Perry added in a comment.
Minaj also joined the fun by posting her own TikTok using the viral sound and encouraging fans to support creators, writing in the comments, “Barbz, show love to the ppl doing the trend. Love you. You’re cute. Or whatever.”
Which celebrities have participated in the trend?
Jennifer Lopez/TikTok
One of the most-watched versions of the trend stars an unexpected duo: activist Malala Yousafzai and Jimmy Fallon. Their video has racked up nearly 80 million views on TikTok, with fans stunned to see the Nobel Prize laureate standing back-to-back with the late-night host.
“Oh my God, I don’t think people understand how revolutionary this is,” one user commented.
Other celebrities have jumped on the trend as well. Before hosting and performing on Saturday Night Live in October 2025, Sabrina Carpenter teamed up with cast member Marcello Hernandez for a studio version that pulled in over 18 million views. And the celebrity cameos don’t stop there — Kylie Jenner and Khloé Kardashian, Joe Jonas and Khalid, Demi Lovato and Adéla have all posted their own mashup duets.
But Perry may have everyone beat — she’s participated in several mashup videos, teaming up with people like Jennifer Lopez and singer-songwriter Sophia Treadway.
“What’s up, TikTok???” Perry commented on Lopez’s video.
