Nobody Wants This couldn’t be a less accurate name for Netflix’s breakout romantic comedy series.
The hit show stars Adam Brody as unconventional rabbi Noah, who unexpectedly falls in love with relationship/dating podcaster Joanne (Kristen Bell). The two couldn’t be more different, with Noah’s dorky nice guy shtick and Joanne’s outgoing wildchild demeanor, but they ultimately make each other better.
The series is rounded out by Justine Lupe as Bell’s sister and podcast co-host Morgan, looking for love and Timothy Simons as Noah’s brother Sasha, working on his relationship with his wife, Esther (Jackie Tohn). With Brody’s real-life wife Leighton Meester joining the cast as Joanne’s former rival Abby, Nobody Wants This only amped up the potential for comedic hijinks in season 2, which premiered on Oct. 23.
Bell spoke with PEOPLE about how the show came at just the right time to reinvigorate the modern TV rom-com.
“I couldn’t anticipate the level of love that was shown from fans who watched the series once, twice, three times … I knew that it was special, but there are tons of special shows that never get watched,” Bell said. “I think the reinvigoration of a very grounded yet modern rom-com, it was just the right time.”
From shows focusing on young adult relationships like How I Met Your Mother to heartwarming romantic comedies with intercultural relationships like New Girl, here are 14 shows like Nobody Wants This.
Lovesick
CLERKENWELL FILMS/Alamy
Dylan (Johnny Flynn) must have a reckoning with himself and his love life after contracting chlamydia and being told to contact all his previous partners to inform them.
This helps Dylan realize that his casual flings may not bring long-term fulfillment as he begins to fall in love with his best friend Evie (Antonia Thomas).
The comedic tone is similar to Nobody Wants This — Dylan and Joanne would have plenty of fun swapping dating stories if the two shows crossed over.
Love
Suzanne Hanover/Netflix
Love is a Judd Apatow-directed romantic comedy-drama series, which focuses heavily on themes and jokes around its titular concept with a thoughtfulness akin to Nobody Wants This.
Love finds the socially awkward and hyper-dependent Gus (Paul Rust) beginning an unlikely relationship with the somewhat erratic, untrustworthy Mickey (Gillian Jacobs) as the two confront their vast emotional baggage.
However, while hating on love, the pair manage to discover plenty of new insights. They use their new romance to heal from their recently ended romantic endeavors, too.
How I Met Your Mother
Carin Baer/Fox
At the core of Nobody Wants This is a group of young adults finding their way in the world while looking for love. This is the exact premise of How I Met Your Mother, which sees Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) looking for love in New York City.
Similar to Joanne, Ted frequently tells dating stories. Similar to Noah, Ted is portrayed throughout the show as a good guy while looking for true love. He is also surrounded by a ragtag group of friends, played by Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan, much like Noah and Joanne’s (mostly) supportive crews.
New Girl

In New Girl, freshly single teacher Jessica (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three male friends in Los Angeles. While some of the relationships she develops are platonically caring, her friendship with Nick (Jake Johnson) blossoms into something more.
New Girl carries a similar heartwarming, romantic and comedic tone to Nobody Wants This. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cee-Cee’s (Hannah Simone) intercultural relationship — coming from Jewish and Indian backgrounds, respectively — is also reminiscent of Joanne and Noah’s relationship in Nobody Wants This.
Fleabag
Steve Schofield/Amazon Studios
In the uproarious British comedy Fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character has a litany of problems. She knows it and regularly breaks the fourth wall to talk to the audience about filling voids in her life with men and not being able to keep her finances in check.
However, season 2 of Fleabag is arguably the most similar show to Nobody Wants This as Fleabag meets a priest (Andrew Scott) who is vastly different from her.
Like Noah, the priest is devoted to his faith and like Joanne, Fleabag is agnostic, but both couples come together and learn how to have more fun and faith while making each other better.
Modern Love
Giovanni Rufino/Amazon Studios
Inspired by The New York Times weekly column of the same name featuring true stories, Modern Love is an anthological look at a variety of love stories. Led by a powerhouse cast in each episode including Tina Fey, Julia Garner, Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Cristin Milioti, John Slattery and more, this series explores love in all its forms from platonic to romantic.
The series also explores a variety of age and gender differences, views on romance and a wide breadth of relationship types with musings on the subject reminiscent of Nobody Wants This.
How I Met Your Father
Patrick Wymore/Hulu
How I Met Your Father’s main character Sophie (Hilary Duff) has many similarities with Joanne from Nobody Want This. Both protagonists have a wicked sense of humor and are obsessed with talking about their dating life.
How I Met Your Father is a spinoff of How I Met Your Mother, featuring Sophie telling the story of how she met her son’s father as she and her friends figured out life and dating in New York. The show also featured past characters from How I Met Your Mother, including Barney (Harris) and Robin (Smulders).
The Good Place
Colleen Hayes/NBC
For fans who love seeing Bell play a rough-around-the-edges protagonist who learns to be a better person in Nobody Wants This, they’re in luck. In The Good Place, Bell dies and goes to a heaven-esque utopia, but it turns out she stole someone’s place and doesn’t actually deserve to be there.
However, with the people she meets along the way, Bell eventually learns to be a better, more ethical person while proving that she may deserve a spot in the good place after all.
Love Life
FEIGCO ENTERTAINMENT/LIONSGATE/Alamy
Love Life follows some of the same romantic comedy tropes as Nobody Wants This, but each season features a central protagonist in an anthology style.
Season 1 is primarily set in 2010s N.Y.C. as viewers watch every relationship Darby (Anna Kendrick) has on her path to finding love. Season 2 features Marcus (William Jackson Harper) re-entering the world of dating after divorce.
Happy Endings

Happy Endings flips the formula of six young adults figuring out love and life together on its head by starting with Dave’s (Zachary Knighton) fiancée, Alex (Elisha Cuthbert), leaving him at the altar. The twist? The pair remain part of the same friend group.
Like Nobody Wants This, Happy Endings is a romantic comedy in every sense of the word, with extreme emphasis on the comedy aspect.
Once you mix in a married couple featuring successful businessman Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.) and neurotic, perfectionist Jane (Eliza Coupe), aspiring restaurateur manchild Max (Adam Pally) and outgoing serial dater Penny (Casey Wilson), the hijinks come naturally.
Platonic
Apple TV+
Although Sylvia (Rose Byrne) and Will (Seth Rogen) are just friends — hence the show Platonic’s name — the show still features male and female protagonists navigating relationships in adulthood. Will is recently divorced when he reconnects with his old friend Syliva, and the two help each other figure out life in ways no one else can.
Although Platonic is a bit more risqué than Nobody Wants This, Joanne would definitely approve of some of the antics Sylvia and Will get into.
Sex and the City

If Joanne’s podcast about dating was the show’s central focus, it would be incredibly similar to Sex and the City.
The iconic HBO show features Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) writing a column about her own dating life in N.Y.C., with a similar sense of humor to Joanne’s. Carrie is also surrounded by her girlfriends, played by Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, who have their own romantic antics.
Friends

Friends features a group of six friends in N.Y.C. trying to figure out their lives and relationships, similar to Nobody Wants This.
However, Monica (Courteney Cox) and Chandler’s (Matthew Perry) relationship may be the most similar aspect to Nobody Wants This as their bond comes about unexpectedly, with Monica’s kind, outgoing nature and Chandler’s sarcastic, reserved nature opposing each other.
There are also undeniable parallels between Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) and Noah’s goofy, lovable personalities.
That ‘70s Show
FOX NETWORK/Alamy
That ‘70s Show may be focused on teenagers, but it has a similar tone of romance and comedy to Nobody Wants This. Eric Forman’s (Topher Grace) dorky, but amiable personality may be most similar to Noah on Nobody Wants This, but it’s actually the romance between Jackie (Mila Kunis) and Kelso (Ashton Kutcher), that is most reminiscent of the newer show.
Jackie and Kelso couldn’t be more different in many ways — she comes from a wealthy background and often gives off a bossy, pretentious air, while he couldn’t be cooler or more laissez-faire.
Their relationship is arguably more dysfunctional than Noah and Joanne’s, but they find a way to make it work, even if Kelso has many other girls pining after him.
