Warning: Peacemaker spoilers ahead!
Peacemaker is one popular piece of the DC Universe puzzle.
The superhero show stars John Cena as Chris Smith, a superhero vigilante named Peacemaker, who was first introduced in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. As the series unfolds, Smith alternates between worlds and realities to try to confront his past and rewrite his future.
In season 2, Smith appears to have found his equilibrium where he’s able to transition from his past reality to a new world that includes his brother, Keith Smith (David Denman) and father Auggie Smith (Robert Patrick). However, Smith’s peace comes to a sudden halt in the season finale when he discovers the harsh truth that the planet was actually a prison.
Although the season 2 finale of the HBO Max show ended on a dark cliffhanger, it’s unclear if there are any plans to continue with a redemption arc for Smith. The show’s creator, James Gunn, explained that Peacemaker was created to contribute to a bigger picture within the universe.
“It may not seem like it at first, but it is all very connected,” Gunn teased to Variety after the season 2 finale.
Alongside Cena as Peacemaker, the series also stars Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase a.k.a. Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
Here’s everything to know about a possible season 3 of Peacemaker and what James Gunn has said about the future of the DC Universe show.
Will there be a Peacemaker season 3?
HBO Max
As of the season 2 finale, which aired on Oct. 9, there are no plans in place to create a third season of Peacemaker.
Season 1 of the hit show premiered in January 2022, and season 2 was released in August 2025.
What has creator James Gunn said about a potential Peacemaker season 3?

Peacemaker creator and DCU co-CEO Gunn has said that he has no plans to create a third season of the show, but it’s not totally out of the question. He also teased that even if there is no season 3, it may not be the last time fans see the Peacemaker characters.
“This is about the other stories in which this [cliffhanger] will play out,” Gunn explained to Variety. “Never say never. But right now, this is about the future of the DCU.”
Gunn reiterated the sentiment to Deadline and added, “This is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be [a third season]. I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.”
However, Gunn still insisted that the character of Peacemaker is “really important to me” and got emotional reflecting on the second season.
“I really love the character,” he told Variety. “I could say about me, but I don’t really think it is. Chris is just incredibly human. He started out as a character who was the kind of guy that everybody calls morally reprehensible online every day.”
As for the possibility that Peacemaker or any of the other characters will appear in future DCU shows and films, Gunn teased to Deadline, “Well, we’ll have to see. That’s a secret.”
“Some of these characters will continue, but also, it’s not exactly Peacemaker 3. I’m not ruling it out,” he explained.

In the Peacemaker season 2 finale, Smith’s reality gets turned upside down when he’s kidnapped by A.R.G.U.S. (Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans) and brutally introduced to a new world, Salvation.
Salvation, which Gunn said will play a major role in future DCU projects, is revealed to be a prison planet that A.R.G.U.S. created to arrest and hold metahumans and villains. The program captured Smith to use him as the first participant. The season ends with Smith being stranded on Salvation all alone.
The second season also introduced the mysterious group Checkmate, created by A.R.G.U.S. directors Flag and Amanda Walker (Viola Davis). Checkmate, which is another element that will continue in future DCU projects, is a covert watchdog agency.
Gunn told Variety that he “always wanted to build Checkmate into” the DCU, but that it will remain “separate from the other institutions in the DCU.”
“It’s the real culmination of the 11th Street Kids and their desire to be good,” he said. “I think they’re going to be really, really good at what they do. When we see them next, their circumstances will be a little bit different than the startup that they’re at now.”
