Camilla Luddington and her husband, Matthew Alan, have been by each other’s side since they met in 2008.
When they married in August 2019, the bride opened up to PEOPLE about their first date. Luddington walked down the aisle to The Temper Trap’s “Sweet Disposition” — an homage to their courtship’s early days. “In 2008, we went to a Temper Trap concert together,” she said. “It was our first date!”
Alan proposed to Luddington nearly a decade after that first date. The Castle Rock actor popped the question on New Year’s Eve 2017, and Luddington announce the news the following month.
Before their wedding, Luddington and Alan welcomed their first child together in April 2017. Their daughter, Hayden, made her Instagram debut that month, eight months before her parents’ engagement. They officially became a family of four when Luddington gave birth to their son, Lucas, in August 2020.
Both Luddington and Alan work in the entertainment industry. The actress is best known for her work on Grey’s Anatomy, and her husband starred in 2024’s Presumed Innocent with Jake Gyllenhaal.

Luddington joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2012 as Dr. Jo Wilson. While she is a series regular, her husband previously appeared in one episode of season 13 as the character David Fisher.
One year later, Luddington joked about her fictional wedding to Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and revealed to Entertainment Tonight how Alan felt about seeing her marry someone else.
“It was weird. I was leaving that morning, and he was like, ‘Bye! Good luck with your wedding to someone else,’ ” she told the outlet. “It’s very weird, [but] he’s an actor too so he understands.”
Aside from his cameo on Grey’s Anatomy, Alan has appeared on several TV shows, including Hulu’s Castle Rock, Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, as well as in films such as 2012’s Red Tails and 2016’s Trust Fund.

Before Alan pursued a career in Hollywood, he attended Western Kentucky University in hopes of becoming a teacher. He revealed his original career plans to the Daily Actor in 2019.
“I was studying to be a teacher at the time,” he said. “And I had actually started a master’s degree, and I was working in speech and debate, and public speaking, and writing and English, and that was kind of the direction I was going.”
He continued, “But then I kind of just fell upon this play that I fell in love with at the time and just kind of changed gears entirely.”
The play he mentioned was called The Laramie Project and inspired Alan to pursue acting. “So I read that play and that’s when I was like, ‘Oh, I like the idea of actually performing and acting for a career,’ ” he said.

The two actors might have both appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, but their work together goes back many years prior to the show. When asked if they met while working on the medical drama, Luddington revealed that was not the case.
“Way back in the day, we actually waited tables together when we first got to Los Angeles,” she told Today in April 2018.
The couple’s first date in 2008 was at a Temper Trap concert
Sparks first flew for the duo in 2008, with Luddington previously revealing to PEOPLE that her and Alan’s first date was to a Temper Trap concert.
Over a decade later, Luddington shared a throwback photo from one of their early dates on Instagram.
“#fbf to one of Matt and I’s first dates at a Pirate Dinner Adventure show 🤣….,” she captioned the post.

The family grew once more in August 2020 with the birth of the couple’s son, Lucas. Luddington shared a hospital photo to announce the news on Instagram.
“Matt and I are SOOO happy to announce the birth of our sweet baby BOY Lucas, otherwise known as my little lion 🦁 (shoutout to Leos!),” she wrote.
Months later, in March 2021, the mother of two opened up about giving birth during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Yes, it’s a different experience. I had to labor in a mask, which was, like, the biggest thing. So it was over 15 hours wearing a mask,” Luddington said during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “It was intense. Anybody else who gave birth during the pandemic, I feel like we have a bond too because of things like that.”

Luddington revealed that they thought of themselves as husband and wife before their official nuptials.
