NEED TO KNOW
Andrew Garfield caused a stir after putting on his glasses while presenting an award at the 2025 Golden Globes. But he’s now admitting that was never his intention.
Ten months later, in a conversation with MTV journalist Josh Horowitz, Garfield was candidly asked if he knew his “power” at the Jan. 5 awards show. But the Oscar nominee denied he did, and said “everyone else was projecting something entirely different.”
He then watched the on-camera moment play back, walking fans through his thought process step by step.
“You’re surrounded by your peers and other people you admire and have admired since you were a child,” he explained. He said his heart started racing, and he felt an overwhelming sense of “unbridled terror” while presenting with Kerry Washington.

“’Oh f—. I can’t actually see the teleprompter. Did I bring my glasses? Yes, they’re in my right hand. Okay, great, now I can see,’ ” he said of his thoughts as he put on his glasses in Golden Globes moment.
His intrusive thoughts didn’t end there, according to the actor. “’Oh s—, this shirt is too open. I do not want to give people this much of my flesh,'” Garfield continued.
The actor then said he tried to close his shirt, but it just opened wider. “I’m like ‘Okay, just breathe.’ I breathe, and that makes me do a facial thing. I don’t know.”
Garfield recounted that he said his lines and everything went off without a hitch. “And then, everyone thinks I’m trying to be sexy. But in truth, neurosis is, I guess, kinda sexy ultimately.”
Towards the end of the interview, Garfield added, “My astigmatism is f—— me up right now. Okay, I can kind of see, but now I see too much chest.”
The now-viral moment occurred when he and Washington were presenting the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy during the ceremony.
Garfield wore a dark green Gucci suit with a black lapel detail, with a matching green button-down shirt, which, as he mentioned, had the first few buttons unfastened, revealing his chest.
After the brief moment, viewers took to social media to share their thoughts.
“Breaking news: Andrew Garfield in his reading glasses just received a 55 minute standing ovation from me in my bedroom,” shared one person.
“Andrew Garfield putting on his glasses in slow motion like that just got me pregnant,” wrote another user. A third added, “Andrew Garfield putting his glasses on with his unbuttoned shirt and his chain poking out jesus christ I’m dizzy.”
Garfield’s latest movie, After the Hunt, is in theaters Friday, Oct. 10.
