Jennifer Lopez was hesitant about being blonde for her latest role.
At the Academy screening of her movie musical Kiss of the Spider Woman on Saturday, Sept. 13, Lopez, 56, explained her resistance to wearing a platinum blonde wig as Aurora in the upcoming project.
In a fan-captured video of Lopez speaking to the audience at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, Calif., the star recalled a conversation with director Bill Condon, who joined her on stage.
“He wanted me to be a platinum blonde and I was like, ‘You know Puerto Ricans really don’t do platinum blonde,'” she said. “I do blonde, I can do caramel, I can do honey, but I can’t do platinum blonde because the skin doesn’t allow for it.”
Lopez continued, “He was like, ‘No, no, no, you’re gonna be a platinum blonde,’ and I was like, ‘Well, f— it, let’s do it.’ And we got the wig and then it was just trying to find the right skin tone.”

On Sunday, Sept. 14, Lopez shared a behind-the-scenes look at herself rocking the platinum blonde wig she wore in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
The first image of Lopez’s carousel post sees her wearing a fuzzy robe with a blush pink knotted headband in her hair and gathered into a curly ponytail. The glamorous look was completed with bold red lipstick.
Another photo featured Lopez on set and in character, taking a look at the costume sketches while lounging in a bathtub filled with bubbles.
“Stepping into the role of Aurora felt like dancing through the golden age of cinema … with all the glitz, glamour, and a whole lot of dancing,” Lopez captioned the post. “Stepping back into time has never been so much fun.”
In the comment section, makeup artist Scott Barnes shared that Lopez’s look was “no ordinary glam.” He added, “I created a full transformation for JLo as Ingrid Luna in Kiss of the Spider Woman — and she looks breathtaking.”
Fans in the comments section also compared Lopez’s blonde look to Gwen Stefani’s signature style.
“I thought this was Gwen Stefani at first!” one fan remarked.
Another user joked, “What in the Gwen Stefani is this?”
“Obviously I’m not the only one to notice the Gwen Stefani resemblance in this photo…wow,” a third user commented. The resemblance even stumped a celebrity — singer Natasha Bedingfield wrote, “Omg you look like @gwenstefani. Love you sis.”
