Well, that gossip is McCooked!
A rumor has persisted for years that John Candy and his wife, Rose, got married at a McDonald’s. Although the duo did not marry at the fast food chain, the golden arches were a part of their wedding.
Photos from the Candy wedding clearly show the McDonald’s logo on a wall in the background. In the new documentary John Candy: I Like Me, the couple’s son, Christopher Candy, revealed that the reception took place on a sound stage.
“A McDonald’s Canada commercial had just filmed, and the golden arches are prominently displayed,” he laughed.

In a vintage clip, the Great Outdoors star spoke of the “silly” wedding and his proposal, which took place in Los Angeles while he was filming 1941.
“We’d been living in sin for a number of years, so it wasn’t really the same,” John said. “[The wedding] was so rushed because we were trying to find a date. We couldn’t get a weekend. It was a silly wedding, but we had fun.”
In the same clip, the actor recalled that the church where they were wed was under construction, so scaffolding was visible on the exterior during the 1979 nuptials.
“We didn’t think to look,” John said, laughing, “It was under construction.”
The Candy marriage lasted until his death in 1994. John died from a heart attack while filming Wagons East in Durango, Mexico. He was 43.
“What Rose always brought was this calm, in control, grounding, wise element,” friend Martin Short once said. “If John was upset about something, by the end of the day, Rose would calm him down. It’s one of the most successful marriages I’ve ever known.”
Coincidentally, the Planes, Trains and Automobiles actor wasn’t even sure if his future wife liked him after their first date, which was naturally at a movie.
“We didn’t get along on our first date. It was a blind date, too,” he told a reporter in a vintage clip. “But I was going to show her, how dare you not like me!”
For her part, Rose saw it differently, calling her future husband “very kind, very sweet.”
