NEED TO KNOW
The Only Murders in the Building cast have it handled when it comes to both mysteries and parenthood.
The Hulu comedy returned for season 5 on Sept. 9 with a new case on their hands. While actors Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez are back for more murder solving, the new episodes also feature fresh faces.
The latest characters include “three of the richest people in the world,” portrayed by Christoph Waltz, Renée Zellweger and Logan Lerman. There is also the return of previous stars like Richard Kind, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dianne Wiest.
As the murder mystery unfolds on-screen, the cast also balances parenthood off-screen. At home, Martin has a young daughter whom he shares with his wife Anne Stringfield. Meanwhile, Short has three adult children and Meryl Streep is a mother of four, with a few involved in Hollywood.

The comedian’s character, Charles-Haden Savage, had a tight-knit bond with his ex-girlfriend’s daughter, Lucy, who reappeared in season 2. In real life, he is the father of one daughter.
Martin married his wife, Stringfield, in 2007 after they met while she was a fact checker at The New Yorker assigned to a piece on the comedian, per AARP. Since then, the couple have remained private about their relationship, including their daughter.
Martin previously told AARP that it was “fantastic” being a father in his 70s, explaining, “I think if I’d had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father because I would have misplaced my attention on my career,” he said.
In the documentary, Steve! (Martin) A Documentary in 2 Pieces, Martin opened up about the moment his perspective on parenthood shifted. “The first time I saw true love in my life was after the baby was born,” he shared.
The actor continued, “I looked over at Anne and she’s holding the baby and she’s looking into her face and there was no one else on the planet.”

Short’s character Oliver Putnam is a father on-screen to his son, Will Putnam. Off-screen, the actor is a dad of three children.
The comedian was married to his late wife, Nancy Dolman, for 30 years before her death at 58 from ovarian cancer in August 2010. During their marriage, the couple welcomed three children via adoption: Katherine, Oliver and Henry.
Short’s kids followed a different path from him. Katherine works in private practice as a licensed clinical social worker, while Oliver is pursuing behind-the-camera opportunities and Henry is a veterinary assistant.
Speaking to The Guardian in October 2012, Short reflected on how his daughter and sons were able to cope with the death of their mother. At the time, he noted, “It’s been a tough two years for my children.”
“This is the thing of life that we live in denial about, that it will ever happen to us or our loved ones, and when it does you gain a little and you suffer a little,” he added. “There’s no big surprise.”

Though it was revealed in season 3 that Dickie Glenroy (Jeremy Shamos), the brother of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), was the biological son of Streep’s character Loretta Durkin, the actress is also a mother in real life.
Streep was married to her husband, Don Gummer, for several decades before they quietly separated. A representative for Streep told PEOPLE in October 2023 that they had been “separated for more than 6 years” but will “always care for each other.” During their marriage, Streep and Gummer welcomed four children: Henry, Mamie, Grace and Louisa.
Henry decided to pursue music instead of film, with his songs appearing on the soundtracks of his mom’s movies, including Julie and Julia and Ricki and the Flash.
Meanwhile, Mamie, Grace and Louisa are actresses, landing roles across film, television and the stage. Mamie shared the screen with her mom in 2015’s Ricki and the Flash, playing Streep’s character’s daughter.
More recently, Louisa has gained recognition for portraying Marian Brook in HBO’s period drama The Gilded Age.
When asked by The Washington Post in September 1998 if being a mom or acting was harder, Streep said, “Mothering. Definitely. Acting — that’s praise, money, fulfillment.”
“Mothering — they don’t even say, ‘Thank you,’ “ she continued. “There’s no comparison to acting. I can’t really call acting work, since it’s secretly so fun.”

Christoph Waltz plays Bash Steed in season 5 of the murder mystery comedy. Outside of his career, Waltz keeps his personal life private, including details about his relationships and children.
The actor was previously married to his first wife, Jackie, a psychotherapist, for 17 years. The couple welcomed three children together, per a May 2015 interview with British GQ. However, not much is known about them, including their names.
He remarried to his second wife, Judith Holste, with whom he shares a daughter.
While Waltz has shared few details about his personal life, he has briefly mentioned his kids over the years. In October 2015, the actor told The Guardian that he, Holste and their daughter were in the middle of moving from Berlin to Los Angeles.

After Téa Leoni’s character made a quick appearance at the end of season 4, she returned as Sofia Caccimelio in the new season 5 episodes.
Though Leoni is now married to her Madam Secretary costar Tim Daly, she was previously wed to David Duchovny for 17 years. The former couple are parents to two children: daughter Madelaine and son Kyd.
The actress hasn’t shared much insight about her kids, preferring to keep her personal life private, but her daughter has followed in her parents’ footsteps as an actress.
Madelaine — who goes professionally by her middle name, West — signed with the talent agency Gersh in August 2025, per Variety. She has already appeared in films, including 2021’s A Mouthful of Air and 2022’s Linoleum, as well as TV roles in Saint X and Painkiller. She’s set to appear in the movie Pearl and the Peacock series Five Star Weekend.
Speaking to Emmy magazine in August 2015, Leoni shared that she prioritized parenthood during long filming days for Madam Secretary. At the time, she explained, “My job security is really as a parent. This show is the icing on the cake.”
“I am just staring at my children all the time,” Leoni added. “The other day they said, ‘Mom, it’s creepy.’ I’m like, ‘I just want to watch you watch TV — I’m desperate for this time.’ ”
Over the years, Leoni has walked the red carpet with her two kids. In November 2018, the trio attended the 14th Annual UNICEF Snowflake Ball in New York City, with the family dressed to the nines for a good cause.
Most recently, in March 2025, Leoni and West were at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of Death of a Unicorn in Austin, where they posed together.

Bobby Cannavale plays Sofia’s husband, Nicky Caccimelio, who went missing at the end of season 4. In real life, the actor is a father to three children: sons Jake, Rocco and Rafa.
Cannavale welcomed his oldest son, Jake, with his ex-wife, fellow actress Jenny Lumet, in May 1995. Jake followed in his parents’ footsteps and pursued a career in acting.
He appeared on Broadway in Fish in the Dark in 2015, per Playbill. He’s also starred in movies and television, including roles in 2019’s Eat Brains Love and 2023’s Inside Man, as well as characters on Nurse Jackie, The Mandalorian and The Offer. Jake is also the lead vocalist and songwriter in the N.Y.C.-based band Vixen Maw.
Cannavale is also a father to two younger children, sons Rocco and Rafa, whom he shares with his partner, Rose Byrne. Rocco was born in February 2016, while Rafa was born in November 2017.
During a May 2024 appearance on Today, the Nine Perfect Strangers star opened up about how he and Byrne try to choose work that will keep them close to their kids, including their project Ezra.
“The nice thing about this is like we shot it here in New York and New Jersey, and the kids know where we are at all times when we’re working together, so that’s nice,” he said.
Cannavale continued, “We try our best to really stay together, we always say, ‘We’ve got to keep the band together,’ so we take the kids with us wherever we go and we try to work here as much as we can.”

Richard Kind returned to the Arconia’s West Tower for another season as the eccentric resident, Vince Fish. Off-screen, he was previously married to Dana Stanley, with whom he shared three children: daughter Skyler and twins Max and Samantha.
The former couple raised their children on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in N.Y.C., per The New York Times.
When asked by Vulture in September 2024 about how he chooses his roles, the actor cited his kids as a motivating factor.
“The big reason is I have three children in college. … You have to understand, I’m a character actor,” he explained. “People say, ‘Why do you take that? Didn’t you know it was terrible?’ I took it because it’s not on my shoulders. I’m an actor for hire. That’s what I do.”
