NEED TO KNOW
It just got cold in here for Bring It On fans still hoping to see Kirsten Dunst back in the franchise.
The actress spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the possibility of returning as her cheerleader protagonist Torrance Shipman in a potential Bring It On sequel 25 years later, while at a New York City screening of her new movie Roofman on Monday, Sept. 8.
“No. I’m like, leave good things where they are,” said Dunst, 43, adding that she wouldn’t even really be interested from a producing standpoint.
“I don’t need to put on a cheerleading outfit,” she quipped. “I don’t even know what I would do — be a coach or something? Nah. Let’s leave it as is.”

Bring It On follows Rancho Carne High School senior and newly crowned head cheerleader Torrance (Dunst) as she navigates leading her squad to nationals — all the while dealing with the moral dilemma presented upon learning that the Toros’ routines have been stolen from the nearby underfunded East Compton High School’s Clovers, led by head cheerleader Isis (Gabrielle Union).
The 2000 film, directed by Peyton Reed and written by Jessica Bendinger, also stars Eliza Dushku and Jesse Bradford. Bring It On spawned five direct-to-video sequels and a sixth Halloween-themed installment on TV all featuring new cast members, as well as a Broadway musical, but no follow-up so far that has featured any of the original cast.
Dunst previously left the possibility of doing another Bring It On movie open, telling Entertainment Tonight in April 2024 during a screening of her movie Civil War in Los Angeles, “I mean, it depends. “Everyone’s bringing back their stuff, right? It’s a throwback time.”
“As long as it’s not embarrassing,” the Oscar nominee added of starring in a potential second film.

For now, Dunst is celebrating her new movie Roofman, in which she costars with Channing Tatum. Ben Mendelsohn, LaKeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, Jimmy O. Yang and Peter Dinklage. The movie is directed by Derek Cianfrance.
Roofman, which recently had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, is based on a true story and follows Jeffrey Manchester (Tatum, 45), a “former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname: Roofman,” according to a synopsis.
“After escaping prison, he secretly lives inside a Toys ‘R’ Us for six months, surviving undetected while planning his next move,” the synopsis adds. “But when he falls for Leigh (Dunst), a divorced mom drawn to his undeniable charm, his double life begins to unravel, setting off a compelling and suspenseful game of cat and mouse as his past closes in.”
Aside from her role as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies, Dunst herself doesn’t usually appear in sequel roles. But she’s not opposed to it.
As the veteran actress told Town & Country for its September cover story, she’d like to be in Minecraft 2 — a sequel to the hit video-game flick that is still currently the top-grossing film of 2025 — and noted that her two sons Ennis, 7, and James, 4, really enjoyed the first movie.
But more than having to have a specific project, “Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” Dunst quipped.
Roofman is in theaters Oct. 10.
