Gloria Estefan’s “Turn the Beat Around” music video took a little bit of maneuvering.
During an episode of Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson on Tuesday, Aug. 26, Estefan opened up about the making of her 1994 music video to “Turn the Beat Around” — and how she hid being “eight months pregnant.”
“I was pregnant with Emily, very pregnant when I recorded that whole album, which was songs that moved me,” Estefan, 67, said of her album Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me.
Recalling the music video, Estefan said they shot “at the top of one of the tallest buildings in downtown.”
“I had a body double because I was very pregnant,” she revealed.
For the close-up shots, Estefan had to pull the mic stand close to her body and she recalled something unexpected happening.
“When I was recording that song, Emily would twist and turn and kick… and that’s why she became a drummer probably,” Estefan said of her 30-year-old daughter, whom she shares with husband Emilio. “I was singing and she literally kicked the mic stand out of my hand.”
She added, “We had a big hit with that song.”

Elsewhere in the episode, Estefan and Clarkson, 43, teamed up for a stunning performance of “Mi Tierra.”
“I love all of your songs but this is my favorite. This is the one I’m most excited to do today. I hope I don’t screw up the Spanish,” the “Breakaway” singer said.
Meanwhile, Estefan said that she was “very thrilled” with the way that the 1993 song turned out and “we had all the greats of Cuban music that were in the United States.
After they sang a portion of the song together, Clarkson said her Spanish “wasn’t perfect” but she loves “that song so much.”
“You could be Cuban!” Estefan said, after telling Clarkson she’s “hard” on herself.
The Songs & Stories with Kelly Clarkson episode featuring Estefan, where the duo dives into the cultural impact and significance of Estefan’s songs, aired on Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 10/9c on NBC. It will be available to stream the following day on Peacock.
