Now that summer’s coming to an end, you may have the desire to watch a movie from the comfort of your own home this weekend. After all, most of the major early summer blockbusters, such as Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the $1 billion-grossing Lilo & Stitch, and How to Train Your Dragon, have concluded their theatrical runs.
Furthermore, most die-hard fans have probably already seen major franchise films like Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. There are definitely still movies to watch in theaters this weekend, but the most popular streaming services also give you plenty of options.
This list includes one of the best Netflix movies ever, a fantasy film that played in theaters earlier this year, and multiple streaming originals. Services like Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and Hulu are consistently putting out great movies, so you should never run out of stuff to watch.
The Map That Leads To You
The Map That Leads to You is a romantic drama that is now available to watch on Prime Video. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by J.P. Monninger, and follows Heather, a woman who decides to travel through Europe before starting a new job. However, her life changes when she meets a man named Jack on her trip.
In The Map That Leads to You, Madelyn Cline plays Heather and K.J. Apa plays Jack. They are two incredibly popular actors with young audiences, thanks to their roles in the shows Outer Banks and Riverdale, respectively. Anybody who liked them in those projects will surely enjoy their performances in The Map That Leads to You, which explores the romantic chemistry between Heather and Jack.
Since its release, reviews for The Map That Leads to You have been quite underwhelming, with Screen Rant’s own Mae Abdulbaki giving it a score of 6 out of 10. However, people who typically like romance films will likely enjoy watching the Prime Video movie. It could draw a similar audience to Netflix’s own recent My Oxford Year.
The Map That Leads to You is rated PG-13, so it is suitable for most audiences. Adults and families might not be drawn to the project, but younger viewers looking for a chill evening in with friends or partners should find plenty to enjoy here.
Eenie Meanie
Eenie Meanie is a thriller that can be found on Hulu or Disney+ and is officially available as of today, August 22. The plot of the film follows Edie, a former getaway driver who is dragged back into her criminal past when her old boss presents her with an opportunity to save the life of her ex-boyfriend.
Samara Weaving, who has earned acclaim for her roles in films like Ready or Not and The Babysitter, leads the cast of Eenie Meanie. While Weaving will command most of the screentime, the film also features an impressive ensemble cast, which includes Andy Garcia, Steve Zahn, Randall Park, and Marshawn Lynch.
Since Eenie Meanie is debuting on Hulu and Disney+, there are no reviews at the time of this writing. However, the film is rated R, so it’s intended for adult audiences and will likely be a very violent and intense thriller. If you enjoy those and crime films, then Eenie Meanie definitely seems like it’s worth checking out. Furthermore, fans of Weaving should definitely seek this movie out.
Night Always Comes
If you’re craving another thriller, Night Always Comes is now available to watch on Netflix. The movie follows Lynette, whose family is facing eviction if she can’t put a $25,000 down payment on their home. After her mother spends the money that was meant for their payment on a brand-new car, Lynette is forced to go on a dangerous night-long search for $25,000.
Fresh off the heels of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Vanessa Kirby leads the cast of Night Always Comes, which is based on Willy Vlautin’s 2021 novel of the same name. In addition to Kirby, the cast of the film includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephan James, Julia Fox, Randall Park, Eli Roth, and Michael Kelly.
Reviews for Night Always Comes have been quite mixed, but critics agree that Kirby delivers a commanding performance in the lead role. This movie could be the perfect thing for anyone looking for more Kirby projects after Fantastic Four, or even for those who have enjoyed her past performances, but aren’t big fans of superhero fare.
The film is rated R, and includes several intense sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoy crime thrillers, then Night Always Comes is definitely worth checking out on Netflix this weekend.
The Legend Of Ochi
Unlike the previous three movies, The Legend of Ochi was actually released in theaters in April of this year. Unfortunately, it only made $4 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $10 million (via Box Office Mojo). Its underwhelming performance is disappointing, especially since reviews for The Legend of Ochi were great, with Screen Rant’s own Mary Kassel giving it 8 out of 10 stars.
However, The Legend of Ochi can now be enjoyed from the comfort of your own home since it is streaming on HBO Max. The film tells the story of Yuri, an island farm girl who encounters a creature known as the Ochi, which she has been taught to fear. Seeing that the baby Ochi is injured and lost, she embarks on a journey to return it to its family.
The cast of the movie includes Helena Zengel, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, and Finn Wolfhard. The Legend of Ochi is rated PG and is a heartwarming film that should be enjoyed by the whole family. If you missed The Legend of Ochi in theaters, definitely give it a watch on HBO Max this weekend; it deserves to find a wider audience now that it’s reached a new platform.
KPop Demon Hunters
If you still haven’t watched KPop Demon Hunters, one of Netflix’s most popular movies ever, then this weekend is your perfect chance. The animated musical is actually playing in theaters this weekend for a sing-along event, but it can still be streamed on Netflix as well for those less familiar with the music, or for anyone who prefers a quieter environment.
Ever since its release on June 20, reviews for KPop Demon Hunters have been amazing, with Screen Rant’s own Ben Gibbons giving it a 9 out of 10. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a glowing 97% from critics, which puts it above most other movies released this summer, including heavy-hitters like Superman, Weapons, and Lilo & Stitch.
Additionally, KPop Demon Hunters has broken several records and become the second most-watched movie in Netflix’s history, amassing a total of 210.5 million views so far. The story of the film follows K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who just so happen to fight supernatural creatures to protect their fans when they are not selling out stadiums.
The voice cast of KPop Demon Hunters is led by Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo, and also features Ken Jeong and Liza Koshy. The hit animated movie is rated PG, meaning it’s fun for the whole family. Therefore, even if you don’t want to take your kids to the sing-along event in theaters, they will surely still love watching KPop Demon Hunters at home this weekend.
