All About Halle Berry’s Boyfriend, Musician Van Hunt

Halle Berry has found her “person” — and it’s musician Van Hunt.

The couple were first introduced by Hunt’s brother and got to know one another for four months over the phone during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We were forced to let only our brains connect and discover if we had a connection before our bodies decided to get involved,” she told AARP: The Magazine in January 2022. “I’d never done it this way. I fell in love with his mind, his conversation.”

Berry and Hunt made their relationship public in September 2020. The “Seconds of Pleasure” singer has since proposed to the actress, but she has yet to accept.

“I’ve been married three times. Van has been married once, and so no, we don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way,” Berry told Today.com in June 2025. “But I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married.”

He is a musician

Hunt began playing musical instruments when he was a kid, first picking up the drums at age 7. According to Page Six, his father was friends with Ohio Players drummer Jimmy “Diamond” Williams.

He then learned to play the saxophone and keyboard, and much later, the guitar, which the outlet reported was the last instrument he learned to play.

Hunt is now a Grammy-winning artist with eight albums and two EPs. His latest EP, A Heart Full of Questions, was released in May 2025.

He attended Morehouse College

Hunt attended Morehouse College, but he left the school before completing his degree in English.

He told Essence in October 2020 that if he hadn’t made it in music, he would probably be working in “applied mathematics or astrophysics,” but admitted that he was a “terrible student.”

Hunt has won a Grammy

In 2007, Hunt took home the Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for “Family Affair,” a tribute to Sly and the Family Stone that appeared on the album Different Strokes by Different Folks.

He was also nominated for a Grammy in 2006 for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for his song “Dust.”

He was managed by Randy Jackson of American Idol

Early in his career, Hunt found a strong supporter in musician and producer Randy Jackson, who rose to nationwide fame as a judge on the reality competition show American Idol from 2002 to 2013. Jackson managed Hunt early in his career.

In a March 2012 interview with Windy City Times, Hunt admitted that he never watched his manager on American Idol. “I don’t watch American Idol,” he said. “I don’t even need to. I can just have dinner with him and have a good conversation that way.”

Hunt is a dad

Hunt has a son named Drake from a previous relationship.

“It is a lot of fun! I can’t imagine anybody not wanting to explore the opportunity to be a father, if you should decide to have a child,” Hunt told Xappeal in September 2011.

Drake is an emerging artist who goes by the stage name Dali Rose. He released his first EP, titled Heaven, in April 2025.

In September 2020, Berry shared a photograph of herself on Instagram, where she donned a black T-shirt bearing the name of her singer beau.

“now ya know… ♥️🦶🏽,” she captioned the post, which included a foot emoji, referencing an earlier Instagram post she shared in July 2020 of her feet playing footsie with an unknown man.

Berry’s trainer and close friend, Peter Lee Thomas, showed his support for their relationship in the comments, writing, “The greatest guy I know.”

Berry and Hunt had a missed connection

When Berry appeared on the Feb. 3, 2022, episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres revealed that Hunt performed on the first season of her show in 2004, before Berry appeared on an episode later that same season.

“We’ve talked about this, he and I,” Berry told DeGeneres. “A few days ago, when I knew I was coming here, I said, ‘You know, I was on her first season,’ and he goes, ‘So was I,’ and I said, ‘You mean you could’ve found me 20 years ago and saved me all this misery I’ve been through?’ ”

Berry joked that the TV host “would’ve saved [her] three marriages” if she had them on the same episode.

He and Berry pulled off a marriage prank

In January 2022, Berry and Hunt appeared to announce their marriage by sharing a photo on Instagram of them kissing in front of an altar, captioned, “well… IT’S OFFICIAL!” The post quickly drew a flood of congratulatory comments from fans and friends.

The following day, Berry clarified the situation with another Instagram post, writing that they “were just having some New Year’s Day fun,” and hadn’t actually gotten married.

“Thank you for the well wishes, tho’, it really touched our hearts!” she added. “Now it’s OFFICIAL, the internet is no longer undefeated.”

Hunt later echoed the sentiment on The Domenick Nati Show, saying, “We were just teasing, trying our very own January Fool’s Day.”

Berry has called Hunt the “love of her life”

In December 2021, Berry was honored with the Career Achievement Award at the 4th Annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television. During her acceptance speech, she praised Hunt.

“You know I finally found love this year, everybody,” Berry said. “Even though you all have been on this painful journey with me. You watched me fail and fail and fail. And besides directing my first movie, I also found the love of my life, and I know it’s true, and this is how I know it’s true.”

She continued, “Because you fail so many, you know what wrong looks like. Because I failed so many times, I now know what [love] really looks like. And so my partner is here tonight, Van, and you have supported me.”

A source later told PEOPLE, “Halle has found a soulmate in Van. She feels greatly loved by him. She is very happy and secure in the relationship.”

Berry has inspired his music

In March 2021, Hunt told Entertainment Tonight that his relationship with Berry has “improved every aspect” of his life, including music.

“The inspiration for our relationship goes across everything,” he shared. “I’m a completely different person.”

They attended the 2025 Met Gala

Dressed in coordinating LaQuan Smith designs, the couple stepped out for a stylish date night at the Met Gala in May 2025.

“For me Van is the dandiest of all!” Berry wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the pair.

Hunt proposed to Berry — but she has yet to accept

In June 2025, Hunt surprised fans by revealing that he had already proposed to Berry and was still waiting for her response.

“I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” he told Today.com. “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.”

Berry added, “We should get married, but it’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do just because we want that expression.”

When asked about timing, she simply said, “Soon.”
