NEED TO KNOW
There’s a major shakeup coming to Hulu and Disney+!
As viewers may have noticed, several shows have become streamable on both platforms over the last few years. Fans will see even more integrated content, as Disney announced that Hulu and Disney+ are “fully integrating” into a new “unified” streaming app in 2026.
In June 2025, Disney officially became the sole owner of Hulu and later announced their tentative plans with the streaming service.
“Today we are announcing a major step forward in strengthening our streaming offering by fully integrating Hulu into Disney+,” CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston said in a quarterly earnings meeting, per Variety.
Hulu offers tons of non-original television shows and movies, and produces original content. Some of its hit original television shows include The Bear, The Handmaid’s Tale, Only Murders in the Building, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, The Kardashians and Nine Perfect Strangers, among others. Meanwhile, they also created original movies, like Palm Springs, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, Fire Island and White Men Can’t Jump.
So, is Hulu shutting down? Here’s everything to know about the shake-up at Disney.
Is Hulu shutting down?
Disney/Reiner Bajo
The overall Hulu service is not shutting down, but it is becoming an integrated asset in the Disney entertainment world. Hulu will be branded as Disney’s new “global general entertainment brand” and will replace the Star tile in the Disney+ international app in the fall of 2025.
“Over the coming months, we will be implementing improvements within the Disney+ app, including exciting new features and a more personalized homepage,” Iger explained in the executive commentary call.
While some reports have suggested that Hulu will no longer be a stand-alone app, a Disney source told Deadline that those assumptions are premature. The insider assured consumers that they can still purchase both Disney+ and Hulu as stand-alone services even into 2026.
The Disney execs explained that the integration efforts “will culminate with the unified Disney+ and Hulu streaming app experience that will be available to consumers next year.”
“This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest-caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment, family programming, news and industry-leading live sports content in a single app,” Iger explained.
They further added that their goal with the streaming app integrations is to showcase one platform that offers subscribers “tremendous choice, convenience, quality and enhanced personalization.”
“You’re going to end up with a far better consumer experience when those apps are combined by combining all of the program assets of both current apps, and with an improved consumer experience comes the ability to lower churn, which is obviously something that we’re very, very focused on and committed to doing,” Iger continued.
Are Hulu and Disney+ already integrating content?
FX
Prior to the official integration announcement, Hulu and Disney+ had already been working on joining forces ever since Disney became a Hulu shareholder in 2009. However, Disney’s control of Hulu was limited, as Comcast had a one-third stake. In June 2025, Disney officially bought Comcast’s stake for around $9 billion, which allowed them to begin full integration, per Variety.
Prior to the buyout, Disney+ started to take steps to integrate Hulu into the streamer, including placing the Hulu tile on the homepage. In addition, both Disney and Hulu started streaming some of the same third-party shows in their stand-alone apps.
What is the fate of Hulu TV shows and movies?
Hulu
Since Disney has not officially announced that the stand-alone Hulu app will be dissolved, fans can still enjoy their favorite Hulu original shows and movies.
However, since Disney+ has already started integrating some of Hulu’s content, many of the hit TV shows and movies are already available on Disney+. If people have already purchased the Disney+ and Hulu bundle, they have access to the complete library of both streamers’ originals.
When will the “unified” app launch?
Hulu
The “unified Disney+ and Hulu streaming app experience” will be available sometime in 2026, but Disney executives did not disclose the exact date.
