NEED TO KNOW
Chappell Roan fans might have to wait a bit for her to release new music.
Speaking to Vogue in an interview published on Monday, Aug. 4, the Grammy winner opened up about her songwriting process and the music video for her song “The Subway,” released days before.
Roan, 27, said that while fans are clamoring for a follow-up to her 2023 album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and her releasing singles “The Giver” and “The Subway,” “the second project doesn’t exist yet.”
“There is no album. There is no collection of songs.”

Roan said that her first album took five years to write and “it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next.” “I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out.”
“I don’t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything,” the “Pink Pony Club” singer admitted.
She also mentioned the pacing of her songwriting process. “I see some comments sometimes, like, ‘She’s everywhere except that damn studio.’ Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster,” she said.
Fans also won’t find the “Hot to Go” singer posting about her creative process on social media either for her next album.
“I’ve never written an album where I don’t have Instagram or anything,” Roan told the publication. “The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it.”
With her song “The Subway,” Roan, whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, said that it took “an annoying amount of time” to get it “just right.”
“I was having a hard time getting over this one person, and I just could not get over them,” she told Vogue. “When I was writing, I was constantly trying to be like, we’re done, we’re done, we’re done, we’re done. The feelings are still there, even though we’re done.”

Roan told PEOPLE in September 2023 about her songwriting process for The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and what she hoped fans would get out of it. “I think people like to party and I think my project feels like a party,” she said at the time.
“I think that people just want to be happy and reflect, sing, dance and dress up, and feel free. The project gives people an opportunity to express themselves without judgment and freedom to discover themselves in the same way that I feel like the project allows me to discover myself.”

The album ultimately included a range of her earlier singles and more recent songs. “They all are part of the same story that’s just been evolving for the past four years, and I just felt like they had to be in there.”
She said they were “part of the bigger picture” and “needed to be on the record.”
