The furry residents of Zootopia are back — and wilder than ever.
In February 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed to Deadline that a sequel to the Oscar-winning 2016 film was in the works. The first trailer was released in May 2025, revealing that animal detectives Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) are investigating a mysterious reptile who “arrives in Zootopia and turns the mammal metropolis upside down.
“To crack the case, Judy and Nick must go undercover to unexpected new parts of town, where their growing partnership is tested like never before,” the official synopsis reads.
In addition to Goodwin and Bateman, the original movie featured other major stars like Idris Elba, Jenny Slate and Shakira, who was thrilled to play a show-stopping gazelle pop star for her kids.
“Doing something for Disney is just a whole different story, an experience that is completely unique and knowing that I’ll be able to share this with my kids later on in their lives,” the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer told PEOPLE in March 2016.
She continued, “Not only now, but also when they grow up, we’ll be able to spend the afternoon on the sofa watching Zootopia when they’re older. It’s a movie that will be there forever.”

Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps

It wouldn’t be Zootopia without the sunny, can-do attitude of Judy Hopps, voiced by none other than Goodwin. The Once Upon A Time alum voiced the rabbit in the 2016 film and the Zootopia+ series. She told PEOPLE in August 2024 that she wears bunny ears to get into character and compared returning to the role to riding a bicycle.
“Now I have the first movie to use as my homework,” Goodwin said, “because I feel like the first time around was about finding her, and then I saw the movie and understood who the character was.”
Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde

The yin to Judy’s yang, Bateman brought to life everyone’s favorite cynical red fox, Nick Wilde. Back in March 2016, the Arrested Development star told ScreenRant that he would love to see his character continue living out his dream of becoming a police officer — and, according to the Zootopia 2 synopsis, that is the case.
“I’d like to see them tackle some big cases and bring down some heavyweight criminals,” Bateman told the outlet. “That would be kinda fun if we can kinda scope things out a little bit more.”
Ke Huy Quan as Gary De’Snake

Everything Everywhere All at Once star Ke Huy Quan joins the Zootopia universe as Gary De’Snake, a pit viper whom Judy and Nick are tasked with tracking down.
The Oscar-winning actor has previously lent his voice to Kung Fu Panda 4, where he played Han.
Fortune Feimster as Nibbles Maplestick

Another new addition to the animal-run metropolis of Zootopia is Nibbles Maplestick, a beaver voiced by comedian and actress Fortune Feimster.
The Mindy Project star has a long list of animated characters under her belt in series like Bless the Harts, Velma and Craig of the Creek.
Shakira as Gazelle

Even in an animated film, she’s still a pop star. Shakira reprises her fan-favorite role as Zootopia’s most famous singer, Gazelle, a Thomson’s gazelle with hips that don’t lie.
The Colombian singer previously recorded a new single, “Try Everything,” for the 2016 film’s soundtrack.
Quinta Brunson as Dr. Fuzzby

Quinta Brunson plays Dr. Fuzzby, a quokka who works as a partner therapist for Nick and Judy.
In the trailer, Dr. Fuzzby describes herself as a “therapy animal” who leads a counseling group called Partners in Crisis.
Idris Elba as Chief Bogo

No one plays a cop quite like Elba. But unlike his emotionally impulsive titular role on Luther, he returns to the Zootopia 2 cast as the Zootopia Police Department chief, a massive buffalo named Bogo.
Jenny Slate as Dawn Bellwether

Dawn Bellwether is back, and she’s still behind bars for orchestrating a plot for predator animals to establish dominance over the frequently preyed upon.
Slate will reprise her role as the sneaky sheep, which she originated in Zootopia.
Alan Tudyk as Duke Weaselton

Alan Tudyk returns to the Zootopia franchise as small-time weasel crook Duke Weaselton.
The Resident Alien star voiced a character of that same name in the 2013 film Frozen.
Tommy Chong as Yax

The chillest yak in Zootopia — voiced by the equally chill Tommy Chong of the comedy duo Cheech & Chong — is back for Zootopia 2.
Like Chong, Yax is enlightened and laidback as the owner of a naturist club.
