Dermot Mulroney Says ‘There Is Talk’ of Making a My Best Friend’s Wedding Sequel

Dermot Mulroney is RSVP-ing ‘maybe’ to another big screen wedding.

Mulroney, 61, told the New York Post in an article published Friday, July 25 that “there is talk of a sequel” to his classic 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, while he promoted his Netflix series The Hunting Wives.

“I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote,” Mulroney said of the potential for a sequel. 

My Best Friend’s Wedding stars Mulroney and Julia Roberts as a pair of best friends whose relationship comes to a head when Roberts’ character Julianne learns Mulroney’s Michael is about to get married. Julianne quickly realizes she is in love with Michael and attempts to break up the wedding. Cameron Diaz costarred in the rom-com as Michael’s fiancée Kimmy; Rupert Everett, Carrie Preston and Philip Bosco also featured in the movie. 

“Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream,” Mulroney added of making My Best Friend’s Wedding, while speaking with the outlet. “I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia, like waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys and I got the role. I knew – and all of Hollywood knew – it was going to be an exceptional movie.”

My Best Friend’s Wedding is among Mulroney’s best-known films. The movie was on his mind when he filmed the 2023 rom-com Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Sweeney, 27, told PEOPLE back in December 2023 that the cast screened My Best Friend’s Wedding during production and that they “were all bawling our eyes out when Dermot was just talking about his experience and his love for it.”

Powell later shared that Mulroney had not actually watched My Best Friend’s Wedding in 25 years prior to catching it with Anyone But You’s cast. During a June 2024 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, he recalled Mulroney “was super emotional” about the experience. 

“He told me [not to] shy away from being a romantic lead. There’s no greater privilege or greater joy than to represent love for people and bring joy [to] the theaters in the name of love,” Powell said of his conversations with Mulroney at that time.

Speaking with the Post, Mulroney credited My Best Friend’s Wedding with creating his “lasting friendship with Julia” and connection with other cast members like Everett, Diaz and and director P.J. Hogan. “You can do a really tragic dramatic movie and still have tons of fun,” he added. “But I’ll never forget those days in Chicago on that [movie].”
