Tasha Cobbs Leonard and John Legend Detail New ‘Church’ Collaboration (Exclusive)

Get ready to take a trip to church with Tasha Cobbs Leonard and John Legend.

The two artists have teamed up for a powerful new collaboration, “Church,” and PEOPLE can exclusively premiere the music video for the song, which appears on Leonard’s new album TASHA, out now.

“When John and I recorded ‘Church,’ we wanted to create something that felt honest and sacred — like a moment of worship you could have anywhere,” Leonard tells PEOPLE of the song. “No lights, no crowd, no distractions — just two voices and a piano, lifting up something bigger than us.”

Featuring Legend on piano, “Church” finds the musicians flexing their powerhouse vocals through lyrics about connecting to one’s faith with or without a physical space to worship. “God, it’s just You and me now / Tellin’ me what to do now / Teach me how to have church on a Monday,” they sing on the chorus.

Legend says of how the song came about, “Tasha and I were connected by a mutual friend, and I’m so glad we got the chance to work together! She’s such a wonderful artist — her voice, songwriting and ministry are powerful and inspiring.”

The music video for “Church” features a simple scene of Leonard and Legend performing the song with a choir and everyone wearing white, as if the physical setting is a blank canvas for the song’s message to shine.

“I love this song and loved making this record and video with Tasha,” adds Legend. “I can’t wait for the world to experience the joy we felt.”

TASHA was released on Friday, July 25 and also features collaborations with Lecrae, Chandler Moore and Kirk Franklin. “This album is the most personal thing I’ve ever released,” says Leonard.

“It’s full of truth — some joyful, some painful — but all of it rooted in my faith and my story,” explains the Grammy winner. “TASHA is about finding freedom, finding God in unexpected places, and learning to show up fully, as yourself.”
