My Little Pony debuted as a line of toys in 1981, with the first film based on the franchise, My Little Pony: The Movie, premiering in 1986.
It was followed by a My Little Pony animated TV series later that same year, and then another series, My Little Pony Tales, in 1992.
The franchise had a resurgence in 2010 upon the release of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic in 2010, which was developed by Lauren Faust and ran for nine seasons.
A new My Little Pony: The Movie, based on the Friendship Is Magic characters, was released in 2017. The latest film, My Little Pony: A New Generation, hit Netflix in 2021.
2017’s My Little Pony: The Movie was the latest theatrical release in the franchise, and featured the voices of Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Liev Schreiber and Uzo Aduba.
The animated film was a major success for Lionsgate after it earned more than $60 million at the global box office, against a $6.5 million budget.

While it’s unclear whether Faust, 50, is involved in the new live-action film, she made it clear in 2018 that she wasn’t part of My Little Pony: A New Generation.
“For anyone asking — I’m afraid I’m not involved in MLP G5,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter) at the time. “But I am heading up a reboot of DC Super Hero Girls I hope you like just as much!”
