NEED TO KNOW
Nothing says royal childhood quite like a Liberty print dress or a sailor suit.
So when Pepa González, founder of the British brand Pepa London, was invited to delve into the archives of the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, cared for by Historic Royal Palaces and housed at Hampton Court Palace, she jumped at the chance.
“Seeing these incredible garments, so full of history and care, was truly moving for me,” González tells PEOPLE. “From that moment, we knew we wanted to create a collection that would honor that history, but in true Pepa London style, bring it up to date.”
Inspired by almost 10,000 items in storage, some of which date back to the 16th century, the designer was particularly drawn to the Liberty print dresses as worn by a young Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, currently on display as part of the Dress Codes exhibition at Kensington Palace.

“They speak of sisterhood, of shared childhood memories. We wanted to honor that spirit, so we worked closely with Liberty to develop and source a modern-day take on the original florals,” González says.
Other pieces in the limited-edition collection, which will be available to buy in mid-July, nod to a nautical theme, inspired by the sailor suits Queen Victoria dressed her children in back in the 19th century.
“We’ve reimagined them in crisp structured cottons with sharp tailoring and fine piping – timeless but with a fresh sense of refinement that feels just right for the modern child,” González explains.

This is not the designer’s first brush with royalty. In 2017, she created the bridesmaid and page boy outfits for Pippa Middleton’s wedding. She also dressed Prince George in a now-iconic whale jumper in official pictures to mark his third birthday the year prior, and Princess Charlotte wore a Pepa London pale blue and coral hand-smocked dress for her first royal engagement in Canada the same year.

“Having dressed royal children for special moments already, this collaboration felt like a natural extension — a chance to create garments that aren’t just beautiful but part of living history,” says González.

It’s a sentiment she remembers feeling when she was asked by Kate’s sister to create the children’s outfits for her wedding to James Matthews eight years ago.
“Seeing Prince George and Princess Charlotte wearing our designs on such a memorable day was incredibly special,” the designer reminisces. “Knowing they are part of the family’s treasured memories forever means the world to me.”
