1
The Fall Guy (2024)
Based on the beloved 1980s TV series of the same name, The Fall Guy takes audiences into the world of Hollywood stunt performers for a wild ride. Ryan Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a former stuntman who is called back into show business to save the directorial debut of his former love, Jody (Emily Blunt).
As is expected with a premise like this, The Fall Guy is a thrilling action-adventure filled with practical stunts and huge, entertaining set pieces. Gosling also taps into his comedic side with this endearing character. The Fall Guy also manages to work as a rom-com as Gosling and Blunt share wonderful chemistry.
However, above all, The Fall Guy is a love letter to the stunt community of the movie industry, acknowledging the hard work they put into making films, even if they don’t get as much recognition. It is a funny, charming, and thrilling ride from beginning to end that will put a smile on your face.
2
Knives Out (2019)
Filmmaker Rian Johnson delivered a brilliant homage to the murder-mystery genre while also subverting the tropes of these kinds of stories in a masterful way. Daniel Craig’s clever sleuth Benoit Blanc was first introduced to the world in Knives Out, as he comes to investigate the death of a wealthy patriarch with a family of suspects.
Within the first act of Knives Out, it is clear that this mystery is spinning the genre on its head in an inventive way. However, as the audience is gripped by the potential murder at hand, it is also a very funny and entertaining comedy, with a star-studded cast that includes Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Chris Evans.
With the third Benoit Blanc mystery on its way, with the upcoming Wake Up Dead Man due at the end of the year, now is the perfect time to revisit the murder-mystery fun of Knives Out.
3
No Country For Old Men (2007)
With the Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men ranking as #6 on the New York Times’ 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, it presents a pretty strong reason for watching the dark thriller this weekend. Based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men is a bleak and violent odyssey that is unrelenting.
While Josh Brolin made an impressive comeback in the role of the mild-mannered army veteran who finds a suitcase filled with cash, Javier Bardem steals the show as sadistic killer Anton Chigurh. He creates one of the most chilling villains in movie history, filling the scene with dread and tension whenever he appears.
The Coen Brothers craft a pitch-perfect thriller with brutal violence and even some dark humor. However, No Country for Old Men’s ending takes things in an unexpected direction and leaves you with a profound message that will stay with you long after the movie is done.
