Kate Hudson is opening up about having kids “really fast” at a young age.
The actress, who currently stars in the film Song Sung Blue, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and shared that she had a different experience filming this movie since she was able to be apart from her three kids for an extended period of time.
“I’ve been a mom since I was 23 — I had [my oldest child] Ryder really young, and I’ve had kids my whole adult life — and here my daughter was turning 6 and it was the first time I didn’t have a really very young child, and I was able to work on my craft,” Hudson told the outlet.

She explained that she’d leave for two and a half weeks, come back for a week, and then repeat the process.
“It makes me think about mothers who make these decisions to leave their family to go make movies like this,” continued Hudson. “It takes a lot. You need to give yourself permission to be okay not being 100 percent present for them for 100 percent of the day.”
The mom of three went on to compare how things have changed for her since she starred in her breakout role in 2000’s Almost Famous.
“It’s a pretty interesting reflection at 46, realizing I left high school, I got Almost Famous, and then I got pregnant and had a baby and had kids really fast,” said Hudson. “The campaigning is extensive and exciting now, but it’s been a long time — it’s changed a lot since Almost Famous — and I am surprised by how many things there are to do.”
Hudson welcomed son Ryder, now 22, in 2004 with ex-husband Chris Robinson, and is mom to son Bingham “Bing,” 14, whom she welcomed in 2011 with ex-fiancé Matt Bellamy. The star is also mom to daughter Rani, 7, whom she welcomed in 2018 with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.
This past December, Hudson admitted to Seth Meyers during her appearance on his late-night show that her daughter Rani has thoughts on her fashion choices — and most recently, her appearance in a Song Sung Blue.
Meyers, 51, spoke about the topic during his show as he pulled up photos of Hudson (who plays Claire Sardina) and her crooner costar Hugh Jackman (who plays Mike Sardina) in character, to which the host pointed out “a lot of ’80s and ’90s hair” sported between the two actors.
“So much hair,” Hudson emphasized. Meyers called their looks “fantastic” and gave credit to the “incredible hair department,” to which Hudson revealed that hers was actually her own hair. The mom of three also revealed her kids feel strongly about her transformation for the role — and not in a good way.
“I put my hair on, I’d FaceTime my kids, and they were like, ‘You can’t FaceTime us with this hair’,” she recalled with a laugh. As for the one child who “has a lot of style notes” for mom, it’s Rani, who Hudson said was particularly observant of the new ‘do.
“Oh yeah. She had a hard time with this hair,” she recalled of her daughter.
