NEED TO KNOW
Jessie Buckley’s husband has a good reason for skipping out on posing with the Hamnet star on the red carpet.
Buckley, 36, has been married since 2023; she and her largely anonymous husband welcomed their first child, a baby girl, in the fall, as she revealed during an October appearance on The New York Times’ Modern Love podcast.
Buckley addressed her husband’s anonymity in an article published by British Vogue on Tuesday, Jan. 6. She referred to her husband as “extraordinary” in the article, and the outlet noted that the pair got married at their home in London. Vogue also described Buckley’s husband as “a mental health worker” who must remain anonymous due to his work in that field.
Buckley said her husband has been “having a ball eating canapés” at various promotional events for her most recent movie Hamnet, but the outlet also indicated they have no plans to step out together more publicly for now. Back in August, she told The New York Times Magazine that her husband is named Freddie and described him as a mental health worker. At that time, the outlet noted that Buckley declined to share Freddie’s last name or his age.

As Vogue reported, Buckley and her husband were originally set up by a music executive named Marc Robinson and met via a blind date in Hackney, a district within London. “A friend said to me, ‘Don’t forget that you’re also a new thing when you become a mother,’ ” she said of her relationship in the months after the couple welcomed their daughter.
“A lot of attention is given to this little baby, but your relationship to the world is new, your relationship with your partner is new, your relationship to your work is new. I don’t know what the next story is that I need to tell because it’s seismic what’s happened,” she added.

Buckley and her husband purchased a home in Norfolk, London, during the pandemic; as the Times reported in August, the home’s previous owners coincidentally based a garden at the house partially on the garden at William Shakespeare’s famous home in Stratford-upon-Avon in the late 16th century and early 17th century. (Buckley’s Hamnet sees her star as Shakespeare’s wife, named Agnes in the movie, opposite Paul Mescal as the Bard himself.)
The actress is fresh off a win for Best Actress at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards for her role in the movie. She is also nominated at the Golden Globe Awards in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category alongside Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Julia Roberts (After the Hunt), Tessa Thompson (Hedda) and Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby).
