Ahead of The Devil Wears Prada 2’s release in theaters in May, the costume designer for the anticipated sequel is sharing how Diane Keaton inspired the outfits worn by Anne Hathaway’s character, Andy Sachs.
In an exclusive preview of the fashion shared by Vogue on Sunday, Feb. 1, costume designer Molly Rogers opened up about how they evolved the costumes worn by Hathaway, 43, who first starred in the original as the aspiring young journalist with very little fashion sense and winds up working as an assistant for “Runway” editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).
Now, 20 years later, Andy has evolved — and so has her clothing. According to Rogers, who previously worked on the first movie under Patricia Field and on And Just Like That, her looks are rooted in menswear designs. Per Vogue, that includes everything from a tailored Ulla Johnson suit and tie to a vintage three-piece Jean Paul Gaultier pinstripe suit, as well as a pleated khaki Sacai skirt and a Gabriela Hearst waistcoat.

“You see her come back to ‘Runway’ from her reporting job and she’s figuring herself out again, professionally and emotionally,” Rogers told the magazine. “We distinguish her from the heel-clackers with menswear and vintage touches, and that New York style of character.”
Hathaway, meanwhile, wanted her outfits to reflect Andy’s time spent on the go. “I pitched that Andy went on to do investigative journalism, traveled the world for 15 years… and when you’ve had an education at a place like ‘Runway,’ you know what to do when you see a consignment shop. So she’s been thrifting for the better part of 20 years,” she explained.
Andy’s evolution also included one notable source of inspiration: Keaton’s titular role as a struggling nightclub singer in Annie Hall. “We based a lot of her clothing off of Annie Hall,” Rogers said, referring to the 1977 romantic dramedy.
Keaton died unexpectedly at 79 years old on Oct. 11, 2025 — just nine days before filming on the sequel wrapped Oct. 20. “DWP2 principle photography is DONE,” Hathaway posted to Instagram at the time.

Furthering Andy’s deep dive into menswear and all things Annie Hall, Rogers told Vogue that she found several vintage Armani jackets “with the perfect weight and swag for Annie [Hathaway].”
In addition to Hathaway as Andy and Streep as Miranda, the sequel stars Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, both of whom reprise their roles as Emily Charlton and Nigel Kipling, respectively, as all four characters “return to the fashionable streets of New York City and the sleek offices of Runway Magazine,” per 20th Century Studios.
The movie also “introduces an all-new runway of characters, including Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak and Conrad Ricamora,” according to the studio, while Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman will reprise their supporting roles as Lily and Irv, respectively.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in theaters on May 1, 2026.
