Jennifer Garner is addressing some questions viewers may have with Rita Wilson playing Garner’s mother in the upcoming season of The Last Thing He Told Me.
Wilson, 69, joins season 2 of the Apple TV series as the mom of Garner’s character, Hannah Hall. At a book signing event celebrating the release of The First Time I Saw Him — the highly anticipated sequel to Laura Dave’s 2021 book, which was adapted into the mystery thriller — Garner, 53, made sure that fans realize just how close in age she and Wilson really are.
Wilson “comes into the show this year as my mom,” Garner said during a Q&A with Dave at a Jan. 15 event in Burbank, Calif.
“Now, Rita is not old enough to be my mother,” Garner continued, “but in Hollywood, we play hard, loose and fast with women’s ages.”

Given how close in age she and Wilson really are (16 years), Garner’s advice for fans was: “Don’t look too much into it.”
Garner teased, though, that she and Wilson “emotionally, we have something really complicated going on.”
Season 1 of The Last Thing He Told Me followed Hannah and her new stepdaughter, Bailey (Angourie Rice), who found their world turned upside down when Hannah’s husband, Bailey’s dad, Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), disappears, leaving only a note for Hannah asking her to protect Bailey.
Season 2 takes place after a time jump, as Owen “shows up after five years on the run,” and Hannah and Bailey “find themselves in a race to figure out how to reunite their family before the past catches up to them,” per the official logline.

Along with Wilson, Judy Greer joins in season 2, marking a 13 Going on 30 reunion for her and Garner, who have been tight ever since they starred in the 2004 rom-com.
While filming in Paris, the actresses had some fun together off-camera. Garner shared a carousel of photos of her and Greer, 50, sightseeing in the French capital last year.
“JG & JG take Paris. ♥️ #TheLastThingHeToldMe,” Garner captioned the Instagram post.
Season 2 of The Last Thing He Told Me premieres Feb. 20 on Apple TV.
