Moesha has been making viewers laugh for three decades!
The star-studded show that served as Brandy’s big break premiered on Jan. 23, 1996, making the singer/actress a household name. The show follows Brandy as the titular character, Moesha, as she navigates family, school, friends and romance throughout her high school and college years.
From quotable jokes to memorable storylines and unforgettable fashion, the sitcom became beloved by ’90s and early aughts audiences and remains a pop culture touchstone.

Brandy Norwood as Moesha Mitchell

Brandy Norwood won over audiences as Moesha Mitchell, with the show’s first season being met with incredible success. The relatable subjects, showcase of where urban and suburban culture intersect, and fashionable outfits made Moesha a hit.
The show’s success led Brandy to star in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Meanwhile, Brandy also continued to work on her music career, releasing her second album in 1998.
After Moesha concluded, Brandy focused on music, releasing Full Moon (2002), followed by Afrodisiac (2004) and Human (2008). Brandy also dabbled in reality TV with her family in the VH1 reality series Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business (2010) and Dancing With The Stars that same year.
Brandy did return to acting, with roles in shows including 90210, Drop Dead Diva and The Game. In the years since, Brandy has balanced both music and acting, even appearing on Broadway in 2015 as Roxie Hart in Chicago. She’s also served as a judge on both America’s Got Talent and The Voice.
Most recently, Brandy has toured alongside Monica on “The Boy Is Mine” tour, while also preparing to release her memoir, Phases, in spring 2026.
William Allen Young as Frank Mitchell

William Allen Young made a mark as the stern but silly dad, Frank Mitchell, on Moesha. After the series concluded in 2001, Young continued working in both television and theater. His stage work, in particular, has taken him internationally, performing across Africa, Austria, France, Italy, London, Sri Lanka and Russia.
Most recently, Young appeared in Code Black and appeared in an episode of S.W.A.T. Young also enjoys family life with his wife, Dr. Helen P. Young, with whom he shares two sons.
Sheryl Lee Ralph as Dee Mitchell

Audiences fell in love with Sheryl Lee Ralph as the fun, tough but fair stepmom, Dee Mitchell, on Moesha. The role earned her five NAACP Image Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
In addition to numerous TV and film projects following Moesha’s conclusion, Ralph also played Elyse in the Broadway rendition of The First Wives Club.
Ralph’s career skyrocketed in 2021, when she joined the cast of Abbott Elementary as Barbara Howard. She continues to thrive in the role and also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2025.
Marcus T. Paulk as Miles Mitchell

Marcus T. Paulk grew up in front of audience’s eyes as the wise-guy little brother, Miles Mitchell. The actor continued in the industry after Moesha’s conclusion, with roles in Roll Bounce (2005), Another Cinderella Story (2008), Red Tails (2012), and Black-ish (2015).
Today, Paulk voices Myron Lewinski in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.
Countess Vaughn as Kim Parker

Countess Vaughn shone as Kim Parker on Moesha, earning her an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1999. Audiences connected with Kim so much that she was cast as the lead in the show’s spinoff, The Parkers, in 1999, alongside Mo’Nique. The Parkers aired from 1999 to 2004.
In the years since, Vaughn has appeared in TV roles and on reality TV. Most recently, she appeared as herself in an episode of Harlem.
Lamont Bentley as Hakeem Campbell

Lamont Bentley won over audiences as lovable, goofy next-door-neighbor Hakeem Campbell on Moesha. Toward the end of the show’s run, Bentley began working on a career in music, rapping as part of the group UPRIZE.
Bentley also continued acting, appearing in The Wash (2001) and playing Tupac in the made-for-TV biopic, Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story, that same year. Bentley was also in Spike Lee’s crime drama Sucker Free City (2004).
Bentley was killed in a single-car accident in Jan. 2005 at the age of 31.
Yvette Wilson as Andell Wilkerson

Yvette Wilson played Andell Wilkerson on both Moesha and its spinoff, The Parkers. After her time on the two shows came to an end, she continued to act, appearing in The Jamie Foxx Show and the film Ganked (2005).
In the years that followed, Wilson experienced deteriorating health. She struggled with kidney disease and later battled cervical cancer. Wilson died in June 2012 at the age of 48. She is survived by her husband Jerome Harry, two daughters and two grandchildren.
Shar Jackson as Niecy Jackson

Shar Jackson was a mainstay in 90s sitcoms, bringing the laughs as Niecy Jackson on both Moesha and The Parkers. Jackson was also on The Bernie Mac Show and My So-Called Life, as well as appearing with Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell in Good Burger.
Jackson appeared on reality TV, on both Celebrity Fit Club and Life After, in the mid 2000s. During this time, the actress also became a mom. She shares daughter Kori Madison and son Kaleb Michael with ex Kevin Federline. She also has two kids — Cassalei Monique and Donovan Jackson — from a prior relationship.
Most recently, Jackson made an appearance as Constance on season 11 of Shameless and had a role in 2023’s Good Burger 2.
Fredro Starr as Quentin ‘Q’ Brooks

Fredro Starr was already a member of rap group Onyx when he began his acting career. He appeared in Sunset Park (1996) and a number of TV roles before becoming Q on Moesha. During the show’s run, he made other TV and film appearances, including in 2001’s Save the Last Dance.
In the years since, Starr has continued to balance acting and music, with albums as part of Onyx as well as solo projects. He’s also gotten into documentary film, producing the 2008 film about his mentor, Jam Master Jay, titled Two Turntables and a Microphone: The Life and Death of Jam Master Jay.
Starr is also an author, having released two children’s books, Lil Freddy: The Red Sock and Lil Freddy: The Bully Kid.
Today, Starr’s focus is primarily on music, working as both a rapper and a producer for other artists.
Ray J as Dorian Long

Ray J came onto the scene as Brandy’s little brother, but has made quite the name for himself in the years since Moesha. After the show, Ray J became primarily focused on music, both independently and sometimes collaborating with Brandy.
Ray J’s personal life also became the subject of many headlines, with high-profile relationships with Whitney Houston, Kim Kardashian and most recently, estranged wife Princess Love, with whom he shares daughter Melody Love, 7, and son Epik Ray, 5.
In the last two decades, Ray J has primarily been a figure on reality TV. In addition to his family reality show, Brandy and Ray J: A Family Business (2010), he also starred in his own dating series, For the Love of Ray J (2009-2010), and has appeared in several iterations of the Love & Hip-Hop franchise.
