Elle Fanning says she hopes to start a family of her own one day.
While speaking with PEOPLE at the Los Angeles premiere of Neon’s Sentimental Value, the 27-year-old actress revealed that having children is “definitely” something that she wants for her future.
She also said that working on the Norwegian drama, which chronicles the story of sisters Nora and Agnes reuniting with their estranged father, taught her a lot about navigating family dynamics in her own life.
“It’s kind of the beauty of this film, the universal themes that people are relating to, and it is about this family that is broken and the traumas that are passed down through families that sometimes you don’t realize, but we all have them,” Elle explains. “There’s a kind of healing power of art. I don’t know if something can be completely healed all the way.”
“It doesn’t tie everything up into a perfect bow,” she adds of the Joachim Trier-directed film, “but it maybe will open the door for understanding and forgiveness, and so that’s the beauty of it for me.”

While Elle isn’t in a rush to take on the role of motherhood, she and her sister Dakota Fanning recently shared that they will be starring in their first movie together: an adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s best-selling novel The Nightingale.
As for how she expects their sibling dynamic will change once they go from family members to co-workers? The Maleficent actress was confident that their close bond would only be helpful to their on-screen performance.

“I think we’re going to have to be fellow actors on set, but of course we are playing sisters in the film that we’re going to be working on together, so we have to bring a little bit of that,” Elle says.
For her part, Dakota, 31, told Byrdie earlier this month that she was feeling a bit “nervous” for their first project together.
“For a while, [Elle and I] were very conscious of carving our own paths and being really selective about the things that we did together,” she explained. “We don’t feel that pressure anymore. We’ve established that we’re two different people with two different journeys.”
“It’s the best to be able to come together now,” Dakota added. “We’re very excited about [The Nightingale]. A little nervous, but excited.”
