Kate Winslet Has Now Worked with 2 of Her Kids: Here’s What She’s ‘Learned’

Kate Winslet is a proud mom!

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the Goodbye June N.Y.C. special screening on Monday, Dec. 8, the actress, 50, revealed what she’s learned about working with two of her three children.

Winslet starred alongside daughter Mia Threapleton, 25, and son Joe Anders, 21, in the television show I Am Ruth in 2021. She also worked with Joe on her directorial debut, Goodbye June, which was written by Joe.

“I think what I’ve honestly learned about my kids is like, they’re just such good people,” Winslet, who shares Mia and Joe with her ex-husband Sam Mendes, tells PEOPLE. “They’re great people. They’re extremely talented. Actually, neither of them really have an awareness of that at all.”

The mother of three also shares her youngest child Bear Blaze, 12, with her husband Edward Abel Smith.

“They’re very humble,” Winslet adds of her children. “They just love the job, they love the work, and they know that they’ve been really fortunate to have worked with extraordinary people from whom they’ve already learned a lot.”

“Because they’ve grown up listening to me learning things and reporting back those stories of something cool that happened on set or something that someone said to me that was really helpful,” the Titanic star says.

Winslet says Mia and Joe have learned the importance of collaboration “because that’s all they’ve ever witnessed in my working life.”

“So I just feel excited for them, really, for what’s to come because they can handle it,” she tells PEOPLE.

Winslet’s comments come after she gushed about working with Joe in Goodbye June.

“When it came to the point of the screenplay being ready, I was going to produce it. I was going to play the character of Julia, and I knew that we were in a position to find a director. And I suddenly couldn’t let it go,” she told host Jimmy Kimmel on Jimmy Kimmel Live last month.

She added, “And I said to him, look, I would love to direct it because when you give it to a director, it becomes theirs, which is exactly the right thing that should happen. But I didn’t want that for him.”

“I wanted him to remain a part of it. I wanted him to experience seeing this beautiful thing that he had created come to life,” she explained. “And he happens to be very, very smart about film, and having him there with me every day was just fantastic.”

In addition to being the movie’s director, Winslet also stars as Julia in the movie, which tells the story of four adult children facing challenging family dynamics as their mother’s health declines during the holidays.

Back in 2021, Winslet told PORTER that “It felt normal” to act alongside her eldest two children in I Am Ruth.

“These are kids who have been testing [me] on [my] lines pretty much since they could read,” she said at the time. “They’ve seen me terrified beforehand. They’ve gone through it with me.”

“Luckily, they’re good,” she said.

I Am Ruth follows the story of a mother called Ruth (Winslet) whose daughter Freya (Mia) faces the pressures of social media.
