NEED TO KNOW
Violet Grohl is following in her father’s footsteps.
On Friday, Dec. 5, the daughter of former Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl released her first two solo singles, “THUM” and “Applefish” after a lifetime surrounded by music.
Violet, 19, took to Instagram to share the news, captioning her post: “I’m beyond excited to finally share a little bit of what i’ve been working on over the last year. I made these tracks with the most badass group of musicians, so happy they’re finally yours:) link in bio 💋.”
The songs are available for digital download on Bandcamp, but the 7-inch vinyl containing both tracks is currently sold out.
“THUM” has a running time of just over two minutes and features lyrics about struggling to break a bad habit: “Can’t help me/Can’t help myself/Buy it by the liter.”
“Applefish” spans almost three minutes and evokes the feeling of being in limbo between your former and future selves.

While these tracks mark Violet’s first solo releases, it’s not her first time sharing music with the world.
In 2007, Dave explained to PEOPLE how Violet was already obsessed with music by age 1. “Violet loves the Amy Winehouse record,” he said. “It’s all about the ‘Rehab’ song. If she hears, ‘Try to make me go to rehab,’ Violet will go, ‘No no no.’ I know, it’s a little weird, but it’s really cute!”

Some of Violet’s earlier music accomplishments include singing Adele’s “When We Were Young” with her dad onstage at just 12 years old and later releasing a cover of X’s “Nausea” with her dad.

Violet also joined her dad onstage back in January for Nirvana’s reunion at the FireAid Benefit Concert for California Fire Relief. She was called on stage to sing their closing song, “All Apologies.”
In 2023, Violet sang with the Foo Fighters on stage at Glastonbury, introduced by her dad as “my favorite singer in the world.”
