President Donald Trump’s name will now be formally tied to peace, thanks to the renaming of a government building.
On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the U.S. Department of State announced that the U.S. Institute of Peace in downtown Washington, D.C., will now be known as the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
“This morning, the State Department renamed the former Institute of Peace to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation’s history,” a post shared by the State Department on X reads. “Welcome to the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace. The best is yet to come.”
Included with the post is a photo of the president’s name in large silver letters, positioned above the building’s sign that reads “United States Institute of Peace.”

The change comes ahead of Trump’s plan to host leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday, Dec. 4, to sign an economic and peace deal brokered by the U.S. earlier this year.
Upon visiting the institute’s website, guests are invited to check for updates or the live feed of the upcoming official signing ceremony of the peace agreement. The institute is still referred to as the “United States Institute of Peace” on the notice.
“Now, the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, which is both beautifully and aptly named after a President who ended eight wars in less than a year, will stand as a powerful reminder of what strong leadership can accomplish for global stability,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement obtained by Reuters.
While it is widely disputed that Trump ended eight wars this year, he has long sought to tie his name to peace through various means.

The move also comes after Trump issued an executive order in February seeking to dismantle the Institute of Peace.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) ultimately removed the institute’s president from its headquarters with assistance from the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, and D.C. police. At the same time, DOGE also fired nearly all of the institute’s staff, per the Washington Post.
